    Question Microphone not working

Can anyone help me with this problem?
I have Vista basic. my microphone was working fine, but everytime i plugged it in it would come up with a box that says, 'do you want this to be a microphone' i always clicked yes.
one day i clicked yes, and ticked the box that says dont ask me this again. Now my microphone doesnt work at all. I know its not the microphone because it works fine on my friends comp. I have looked everywhere for a box, and i cant find anything!
    help..... anyone?

What sort of connection does your microphone use to connect to the computer? A USB or a 5mm headphone jack type connection that plugs into the soundcard.

If it connects via USB, do you know the make and model of the microphone so that we can check if the drivers need to be updated?

    Hi
its a pink and green headset, the microphone as the pink 5mm. and plugs into my laptop. On the headset it says 'ELECOM' but under the mixer option it says sigma Tel, i guess this is the sound card?
In XP i would have jsut gone to the mixer and there would have been a microphone mute button, or in control panel under sound would have done voice test, and it would have told me what the problem is... but i am stumped....

Vista has extremely rubbish microphone support. What do you intend to use your microphone for?

To actually edit the microphone volume in Vista, this can't be done from the mixer for some obscure reason. Instead you have to right click the system tray icon and click Recording devices. Select the Microphone option, go to Properties and then levels. If you are using the microphone with MSN Messenger for example, then volume properties will appear under MSN Messenger in the mixer to edit the input for this program.

If you want to hear yourself speak in the microphone through the PC speakers, you need to right click the system tray icon and select Playback devices. Click speakers, then click Properties and then levels. Then go to Input Monitor and turn it on.

Yeah, you are right, Vista does have rubbish microphone support. I did try all those options, and it shows everything is tured on, and nothing is muted, it shows the type of microphone that is set up, but the levels on the right hand side dont move when i speak, i have tried the recording and it doesnt pick up my voice at all! I use it for skype, as i'm over seas now, and its my only phone contact to friends and family. It is strange, I have started system restore points now, I wish i had of known about them before this problem, then i could just go back to before the problem (when the micrphone worked) I can go back to a point in time when everything works from when the last point was activated. If all else fails, I will uninstall vista and buy a new version of xp, vista has caused me more problems than its worth.
Thanks for your help, if you can think of anything else please let me know.

    Regards Cameron
