Ok i recentley purchased Vista Ultimate put it on my laptop well after using it for a while i found it to be a piece of crap and i just did not like it. So i opened windows easy transfer and made a complete backup copy of my computer and put it on my external.... then i installed windows xp again and now when i go into my external i cannot open the image that vista made nor restore my computer I lost everything what can i do to open this 20gb file that is doing nothing on my external

What is the file type?
Are you saying it created an image? An ISO?

it says .IMG i think it is an image

An .img is similar to an .iso
These file types in general are not created to be "looked at" but there are some viewer programs in this search:

In general they are boot disks or Live CD's.

Also when you say "restore my computer" what exactly do you mean? If you successfully loaded XP then you have restored your computer. The data you were backing up would just have been files: correct?
As Microsoft "frowns" on downgrading it might not be possible for XP to access this data.
Try your external on another computer running Vista and see if there is a difference.
