Hi Guys,

This is probably going to be a very simple query, but it's foxing me. I'm sure one of you clever people will be able to help me.

I have recently bought a new Toshiba satellite laptop with Vista, only because no-one is selling XP anymore and I am still in the process of trying to get used to the changes in names of things and where I will now find easily located folders.
My previous laptop had XP and I was able to set media player, or real player as the default for playing movies and tv shows which had been downloaded. However, this new laptop is not playing them. Or, rather it is playing the sound, but the picture is only being displayed on media player as visualisations those random colours and patterns. It does say something about searching for the Codec, unsuccessfully. They are saved as AVI files.

Can anyone help me resolve this. As you can tell, I'm not terribly technically minded.

I ran into this same problem when I bought my laptop. Here is what I did and it was also AVI files like yours

Download VLC player which has all the codecs built in that you need but before you play the movies with it you need to change a setting (only for vista)

#1 Open VLC media player.
#2Click on Settings and select Preferences… .
#3 Expand Video and click on Output modules. Note that DON’T expand Output modules, just click on it.
#5 Check Advanced options in the lower right corner.
#4 Set Video output module to either “DirectX“, “OpenGL” or “Windows GDI“

You’ll need to restart VLC media player after the change.
