I never tried an sp3 install through automatic updates but through a download from microsoft & that works just fine. As for vista, some people (like my Dad) just hate it even on new computers, & I totally understand that. They don't find it as easy to use, they are annoyed at this that & the other, & yet if they get a new computer they have no choice other than to build their own computer or follow that up with a purchase of XP because NO ONE has XP as an option [thank you MS]. There is also the question about software compatibility & not just hardware. In what way is Vista more secure than a carefully planned installation of XP with safe practices? And yes for those you don't want to (or can't afford to) buy a new computer, Vista might not be for them especially if their hardware isn't powerful enough. There are certain aspects of Vista that I don't like so I think that I'll alway prefer XP to Vista, yet I'll use it but not as my primary OS. Now I'll just have to see about 7.

That can be turned off, but if you understand their arguments behind it then you might not want to.

The alternative would be to run as a non administrator account as your primary account & log into an admin account only when you need to do something that requires admin privileges like installing software. Then it would be safe to turn off.
