Hi jephree thanks for the email. I started off with Vista Home Premium oem and now run a retail version of Vista Ultimate 64bit. I have some quibbles of the system such as the integral security system as the firewall is weak and the Anti virus is a joke so have installed PC-cillin internet security which is very efective. The performance is very good and so is the stability I have never had any problems there, so much fro the doom and gloom merchants when Vista came out. It is power hungry and so one does need at least 1 meg of ram and it therefore it does a little slower than XP on PC's with equilivent CPU's and RAM but having said that the OS was realy built for the present and future higher rated PC's and laptops. All in all in my opinion it is a far better OS than and of a different generation to XP.

This is the first time i m using Windows Vista. Sysytem Configuration is : AMD Turion 64 mobile technology, 1 GB RAM, with Windows Vista Ultimate. It was working fine from last 3 months the day i brought it. But now its giving me problems. My processor usage is uncessecerily is 100%, even if no program is running, Alos it is taking time to boot the system. Can you help?

Hi, have you tried the Vista tools eg defrag the hard disc and disc clean up tools, it sounds to me that you may have a defragmented disc or have to many bits and peices in your registry, also the slowdown and heavy use of your CPU and ram could be caused by spyware as the on board Microsoft anti spyware software is not very efficent. To get to Vista tools click start, click control panel, click System and Maintence, click on Administrative Tools, there you will find Free Up Disc Space and Defragment Your Hard Discs. Try those tools. Then I would suggest if that has not solved the problem go into Advanced Tools and open Generate a system health report, this will give you guidance as to what is causing the slowdown. I would posibly get a good anti spyware software any way, also what anti Virus are you running.

well we all know how much ram fricking aero uses right? (sorry for the profanity). Even when i'm not doing ANYTHING my cpu meter says my RAM usage is at least 60% (50% if im not even running antivirus, spyware, adware and such). Oh and i have a pentium D 915 (i think) 2.8 ghz with 1 gb ram. Now 1 gb is enough... however i don't just use my computer for work and such.. i'm quite a keen gamer, but after looking at all the games 'for vista' in shops i have learnt that their 'recomended' ram is 2 gb... which is a dissapointment for me... i mean i can't even run battlefield 2 smoothly in medium settings in my vista computer... to me, if u plan on upgrading to vista from XP, you need to buy a 512mb ram card just to have you computer running like it did in XP.
But in my opinion, you really should have 1.5 gb of ram for vista home premium for everything to run fast and smooth and to be able to play games (2 gb if u really like your games). But since i bought a premade computer and got a one year warranty, if i open my computer case, the warranty becomes void... which i don't plan on doing.

i would love to know everyone's thoughts on Vista. I have a beta installed on a extra laptop i have at work and personally i like XP better!

Most people do like better those things they are used to. However, technically speaking, Vista is a much better OS - it is 6 years newer after all and in high-tech industries, 6 years is a very long time. The security features alone make Vista the better product.

That said, I am waiting to migrate to Vista until SP1 is release early next year for my personal systems. Also, I do not recommend everyone go out and get Vista. Actually, I would discourage anyone thinking of upgrading an existing PC to Vista, unless it is no more than 1 year old and they have done their homework to ensure Vista drivers are available for all their hardware. However, anyone buying a new PC should go to Vista. Anyone upgrading hardware on their current PC, should buy for Vista - even if currently sticking with XP.

A couple important things to remember about Vista and today's IT environment.

1. Badguys (not MS) have forced all of us to put security as the #1 priority
2. Hardware makers have made HUGE advances in the last 6 years - especially graphics and multi-core CPU technologies
3. Software makers are coding software to take advantage of the latest hardware

One area where Vista does not excel above and beyond XP, in a head-to-head comparison, is in performance. But the fact is, Microsoft does not pretend that it will. The fact is, the hardware requirements needed for Vista to shine are substantial. 1Gb of RAM for XP used to be plenty. Now I recommend no less than 1Gb per core and definitely 2Gb minimum for Vista if you wish to take advantage of its graphics capabilities.

Still, its worth it. A $2000 PC running Vista purchased today will run circles around a $2000 running XP purchased in 2001. Taking inflation into consideration, you get more bang for the money today. Hard to argue with that.

I think historically Vista will rank in a similar status as ME. In other words a troublesome compromise. Vienna is basically what Vista was supposed to be but it was taking too long.

Vienna aka "Windows 7" is built upon the 7.0 version of the NT Kernel.

This was supposed to be the major milestone and it was not accomplished with Vista.

I don't. Vista is already installed and working fine on millions of machines. Vista is a major change where Windows ME should have been called Win98TE (Third Edition) or at best, Win99. You could be right, but I think the remaining issues will be ironed out and Vista will turn out to be a winner. One thing to remember is that all the major hardware and software vendors now support Vista with their new products.

Legacy HW and SW support is lousy however, but IMO, that is okay as I note that XP's support for legacy HW and SW, in favor of requiring users to upgrade to the latest industry and security standards is a major reason the badguys got such a strong foothold established.

Just purchased a HP Pavilion for $535.00 with Vista home Prem; Works; AMD 64 x2 dual core. 4400+ proc.: 2048 MB Nvidia Get Force 6150 SE graphics; 320GB HD.
Model a6110n. Should I open the box and keep it? Only problem I see is the SyncMaster LCD monitor for update driver.
I took notes from what some were building and hoped for the best. I still have my Vista Home program. But it is not 64. Would that make a difference?
Should I keep my XPSP2 for anything? (I am giving my home built to a friend who has not owned a computer before.) I have a Boston woofer and speakers for my music. Should I plug in my sound Blaster live pci card?

Hay all you guy's trying to compare Vista and XP, there is no comparison Vista is a new trouble free system which is designed for the more advanced PC. If you are not running a duel core cpu, at least 2gig Ram, a minium of a 3D video card forget it and keep running XP.

When I say trouble free, I used to rebulid my XP op on average every 3months I have now been running Vista for 7 months now and no problems and running as sweet as a nut. At the outset there were difficulities for drivers but that was to be expected and still is for drivers and software for 64bit version, and still is for the XP 64bit. BUT we havent yet had the drama's we had when XP was released.

The two things that wind me up is software houses will put on their advertising that their product is Vista compatable but not 32bit, or 64bit, or 32bit & 64bit so you go and get the dam thing and find it aint compattable for 64bit, but same problem with XP.

Vista has been realy designed to be run as a 64bit OS but the hardware has not caught up with the software as most Motherboards will only take 8gig of ram with 32bit it will only use3.5gig of ram but on 64bit it will run on as much as the motherboard will take, mine has 4gig the motherboard will take 8gig. If you go by the Microsoft information you can run Vista Ultimate on 128gig +of RAM. The 32bit runs on a max of 3.5gig so you waste .5 gig if you install 4 gig. So you can see ther hardware manufactures have a way to go to produce motherboards to catch up with the PC software and users will have to have bottomless pockets to keep up with the new technology when it comes.
