Vista Install Issues
I dont think this has been covered anywhere else, and if it has, I apologize for not finding it. Here's an overview of the past 3 days. My old HD seized so I bought a new one, my XP disk is completely unserviceable (Got scratched all to hell when my CD Storage unit got knocked over while I was at work), bought Vista because I cant find any retail copies of XP... Go to install Vista and I get a message that says "REQUIRED CD/DVD DRIVE DEVICE DRIVER IS MISSING. INSERT CD etc etc... THAT CONTAINS DRIVERS FOR THIS DEVICE." This pops up before the OS is installed. I dont have any drivers nor can I find any. Now... my understanding is that the device drivers for the DVD ROM should either be embedded in the OS OR in the BIOS. Am I smokin my crack pipe a bit too much (LOL) or am I on the right track? Am I getting this error message because my BIOS is out of date or because my MB is too old to take Vista or am I just not seeing the forrest for the trees? I appreciate any and all help you guys can offer, Ive pulled out every stop I can thing of and Im at a dead end.

That error has been reported with Vista installs.
It is either looking for an ATAPI driver or a SATA/RAID driver. The error has been reported with both issues at hand. Apparently a badly written error message.
All that being said you need to press the F6 at the very beginning when asked if you want/need to install extra drivers.
Next you need to have your motherboard SATA/RAID and or ATAPI drivers on a floppy disk.
The motherboard manufacturer will have these drivers on their web site if you do not have the CD.
Also it is quite possible if the hardware is more than a year or two old that it may not be "Vista Ready".

Ahhh... so once again we're looking at Windows at its best LOL... Thanks amigo.. the help's appreciated

Ok... so I got all the drivers I could find for my old MB, and that didnt work, along with every piece of hardware I had in my computer. SO... lol... I go and spend 500 bucks on an Intel 2.8GHz DC 800, and an Intel 946 MB along with a gig of DDH2 Ram, and Im ending up with the same error.... any ideas? This is beyond frustrating LOL... thanks for the help guys and gals.

Are you using the SATA drive and did you load the Intel drivers at the F6 prompt?

Now we're gettin a bit out of my knowledge base.... SATA is the new set of connectors that are replacing the IDE right? If that's the case, my HD is still IDE along with my DVD ROM. As far as the F6 goes... I didnt even think about that <chuckles>.

Well that only applies to SATA drives.
I will do more searching on that error. It is exactly the same?
"REQUIRED CD/DVD DRIVE DEVICE DRIVER IS MISSING. INSERT CD etc etc... THAT CONTAINS DRIVERS FOR THIS DEVICE."

The error reads exactly the same, which is what floored me... I figgured the updated hardware would take care of that/ <chuckles>
