Last I heard the date was January '07.
Delayed from the target of the X-mas season '06.
Then they also changed the man in charge so who knows?
As to mainstream versions:
Windows Vista Home Basic Comparable to XP Home. Has the security and search abilities particular to Vista, but does not offer its fancy graphics or high-end media features.
Windows Vista Home Premium A higher-end option for consumers. Adds support for Vista's new graphics as well as Media Center and Tablet PC features.
Windows Vista Business Similar to XP Professional. It's the mainstream corporate OS; also contains extra tools for small businesses.
I would think the latter if you like XP Pro.
yah i like win xp pro. but what bout Windows Vista Ultimate? what is it all about? what makes it so special? what would u recomend for gameing? what version is the best overall in your opinion?

... sorry ... on my way to dreamland so I just Googled:

I guess another question which I haven't seen answered yet is the price difference between the versions. $$$
Last I read, Ultimate was going to be in the $1K USD range in a box and add about $500 USD to a system purchase. Ultimate is just that, everything from Vista Home Premium, Vista Enterprise, and then enhancements for Extreme gaming. There are 5 (?) tiers to Vista, Home basic, Home Premium, Business, Enterprise, Ultimate..Actually I think there are 6, the 6th one is for rural countries such as india or Bangledesh or East sussex![]()
Just browsing I found this pretty detailed list of the differences between editions:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...ions_final.asp
I was looking for price but could not find anything... $1,000 US Ultimate![]()
...hmmmm... I paid $199 US for XP Pro upgrade... I wonder if there will be an upgrade version as in the past?
As you can guess, any pricing right now is sheer guess work. I read this in either the December or November MaximumPC mag. I know from the MS rep at Dell that Enterprise will only be available by Open License 6 companies or companies willing to get on that pricing sched.
I am CERTAIN that MS will have an upgrade path for all but Vista Basic.
BTW, that was an Excellent article. I bookmarked it for future reference. Thanks Jephree!
For all the horror stories I've heard about Microsoft I have to say that I haven't had any serious problems with the XP Home installed on my machine. Maybe I'm not pushing it hard enough!
What I meant to ask was, what do they think they can do to improve it to make all the song and dance worthwhile?
http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/pcs/w...ain-171208.phpIt looks like Windows Vista might be delayed again, this time by at least three months—if you believe research group Gartner, Inc. Why is this happening? “Too complex,” say the Gartner analysts. They’re saying we’ll see Vista sometime in the second quarter of next year. Yikes, that could be June, 2007?! Says Gartner:
