Block the use of F2 Key
Hi there,
I was wondering if there is a way in which we can block the use of certain keys in a school.
I work in a school as a technician and recently kids have found out that if you select all the folder and files in somebodies user area and press f2 it renames it all the same thing and some students have A LOT of files and folders, sometimes we can restore the files and folders form our weekly backup but if the students don't find out till after the backup we have no way or restoring there files and folders.
Is there any way of blocking the use of the f2 key or stopping what the f2 key does on the school computers.
Many Thanks

You could remap F2 so that it opens say Windows Explorer or another program...
As an example right-click a shortcut to a program on your desktop and go to properties. Now click in the shortcut key field and press F2 (You may need admin rights)
F2 will now run that program rather than execute a rename.

Hi, Thanks
I was thinking about remapping it is there a way that I would be bale to make it so that it does it on every computer on our network or at least some computer that the students have access too because kids accidentally leave themselves logged in or they go somewhere to get something and another kids renames all the files in the document drive and we have to spend a while recovering it form the backup and if they have worked they just did or have done during the week they lose it.
Many Thanks

Hi SoulStrider,
If you're looking for a bit more control over a group of computers you may want to go down the route of software specifically designed for these types of environments. Libraries, Colleges, Schools and Offices often have security software to prevent users from changing settings, adding desktop wallpaper and generally messing around with the computers settings. If you run a few Google searches you'll see there are a number of applications out there which could help you get more control over what the students can do.
