    Hi Sandysan Welcome to Techie7

I can't think of anything in a Laptop that could smell of TCP.
It could be just possible someone has accidentally split some on your PC and has it gets warm you begin to smell the TCP
I can also say your question also brought a smile to my face on this cold February day.
So thanks for that. (No pun or put down intended)

I don't think you have anything to worry about unless the Laptops getting unusually warm.

Some plastics when they get too hot or when burned can let off some very strong chemical smelling odors. I am not sure I know what TCP antiseptic smells like but if nothing was spilled on the notebook, I would be concerned there is a short somewhere causing excessive current to heat up some device that is getting too hot.

You say the battery does not charge. This often results in the charging circuit over working (and getting too hot) trying to charge a bad battery. Do you smell this with the battery removed?

Yeah, I know what it is, I just don't know what it smells like. Nevertheless, you should not be smelling chemical smells coming out of your notebook.

I ask again, do you smell this with the battery removed?

Then I would suspect the bad battery itself, or the bad battery is causing the charging circuit to overheat.

Well, if it matters, I am blond too - though it is mixed with a bit of gray these days.

In most cases, it is fine to run without the battery. I would check your notebook user manual to see what it says about that.

also would you say my laptop is on the way out , or do ijust need a new main battery
I couldn't answer that - I don't even know how old it is or what type of life it has had. Even then, there's no way to predict how long it will last.
