I Bought a PC new in 2010 and got Office 2010 at the same time
Last week my PC needed rebooting and i have reinstalled Office 2010
A few things seem different.
If i open a new page or sheet (excel or word) and save it in My Documents, when i open it the program comes up as a blank page and i have to look into recent items to find the document
When these items are open the name of the file along the taskbar appears as 'Microsoft Excel non-commercial use - followed by the name of the file'. It used to be that just the name of the file would appear.
Another thing that happens just with word is that if i save a file to the desktop or send a shortcut to the desktop the file won't open at all. I have to open Word separately and look in recent items
Any help appreciated![]()
Sounds like Office 2010 did not install correctly as at least some of the file associations are not working. I would uninstall, reboot then reinstall Office 2010 and see if it makes a difference.
What do you mean your machine needed rebooting? This is done every time you turn off and turn on your computer. Did you mean Windows need to be reinstalled?
If you had to "restore" your computer back to its brand new state using an image disk or partition, then I would guess that original image contained the Office Home and Student trial copy. If you did not uninstall that before installing Office again, that is probably the source of all your problems.
Edit add - I got distracted in the middle of my post and see Rich stepped in. I agree I would uninstall too - but make sure all versions of Office are uninstalled.

Yes windoes needed reinstalling.
The trial copy was on when installed Office 2010.
I have uninstalled Office 2007 but i will uninstall 2010 and see how that goes
Thanks
What version of Office 2007? If it is Home and Student, that is for non-commercial use only so it will still be there. If you have upgraded to Office Home and Business or Office Pro versions, then it should not be there.
As noted here: Office 2010: Which suite is right for you? Home and Student is,So if you are using Home and Student, the "trial" version has nothing to do with this. If you upgraded to one of the commercial versions and didn't uninstall the trial version first, that may be your problem.*Not intended for use in any commercial, nonprofit, or revenue generating business activities, or by any government organization.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2010
Most of the problems have gone except when a named and saved excel file is open the name remains 'Microsoft Excel non-commercial use - followed by the name of the file' until another saved excel file is open. Then they both simply become the name of the file.
And what version of Office 2010 do you have?except when a named and saved excel file is open the name remains 'Microsoft Excel non-commercial use - followed by the name of the file'
Office Home and Student.
Well, that explains it. Home and Student is for non-commercial use only. I suspect it was there all along but you just did not notice it before. No big deal, unless you are using that copy of Office for commercial, nonprofit, or revenue generating business activities, or for a government organization (which would include public school work as a faculty member - as a student would be fine, of course).
Does this explain why the name tags in Excel change when two files are open?
