Hi,
I had a horrid virus on my PC which was cured via this forum so I thought I'd try again with this problem i'm having with an offline DAW. The box is a Toshiba Satellite L650 D and it was working great for over a year. Though as of Jan 1st i can barely get it up and running because I need to reconfigure the usb ports everytime i reboot. I am not having "device not recognized" issues. I'm having a problem with the OS not recognizing any connection to the ports. I have seen the upper and lower filters reg hack. Doesn't appear to be workable on my computer as i wont touch anything i don't understand and my registry files don't match the listed ones. I've used all the built in tools and they find no registry errors, no corrupt installations or outdated drivers and Device Manager says all USBs appear to work perfectly. Yet nothing i plug into the 2 dedicated usb and 1 sATA/usb port is seen. It is definitely not my devices as my PC has no issue with them. I use a 4 port hub but i've tried 2 and both work on setup but fail on reboot.
I have uninstalled every usb driver in Device Manager and let windows rescan/install for the same initial success/reboot fail scenario. As did every bit of advice I've been given.
I'm convinced it's some setting or registry error but i can't pinpoint it.
Due to the DAW being central to my income earning I'm getting desperate. I'd have just used the Toshiba repair discs but with all the essential software and sound libraries installed that alone is a huge task. My system restore points don't extend far back enough for me to feel i can trust them. ( I did one which worked for about a day until the problem returned.)
Basic kit is AMD Phenom II P960 Quadcore, 8gb RAM, Win 7 x64 OS
I'm no tech so i don't know exactly what info is needed but i'm happy to elaborate if necessary.
Do you have SP1 installed? If so, have a look at this link:
Why are my sound, webcam, and USB ports are not working at all after - Microsoft Answers
Next entry, tells you how to uninstall SP1..... this occurred after SP1 was installed.
I took it off ( system restore 3 weeks ago) and things went back to normal, then automatic updates, it installed again - same problems no usb no disk drive. I wanted to do a system restore and turn off Windows update but the last restore date is the date SP1 was installed. PC has now become a white elephant.
If that doesn't help, check to see if you have more than one HD audio driver (or similar) in 'device manager' under sound category. Until I disabled one of those drivers I was getting strange issues (extensive 'event viewer' [seemingly false and useless alert] error entries and occasional but randomly unpredictable BSOD reboots) only when my USB speakers were plugged in - none after disabling Nvidia driver in favour of the likely competing onboard Realtek driver.
Thanks for the reply and the very useful suggestions.
I do indeed have SP1 installed on Jan 4. ( i mentioned the issues started on Jan 1 but in reality that's just the last time i remember it working correctly) This could well be the problem on my system. In my sound, video & game controllers I have the following listed:
Automap HUI
Automap MIDI
Automap Propellerhead
Conexant Audio Driver For AMD HDMI Codec
Conexant CX20671 SmartAudio HD
ESI KeyControl 25 XT
Launchpad
Nocturn
Presonus Audiobox - WDM 2.8.40
Presonus Audiobox MIDI 2.8.40
I admit to being a bit disturbed by the amount of entries but as I'm no expert i try not to touch things i don't thoroughly understand. And apart from Automap Prop. and possibly the Conexants, I use every item listed so was loathe to disable/ uninstall.
Last night I went through the device manager, selected display hidden devices and uninstalled everything with a possible usb reference as i was a little drunk and feeling adventurous. I also uninstalled a few suspect VST's and the game Dead Island (I bought the game but i'm pretty sure it's a cracked version as the disc artwork is slightly blurry) This appears to have solved it but for how long I'm not sure.
If as I expect it fails again I'll give your suggestions a run. I'll repost in a couple of days to share what works for me.
NOTE: When uninstalling devices be sure to disable them first. Not one post I saw online mentioned this simple thing. I had a nightmare time at first as Windows kept reinstalling devices quicker than i could uninstall them. Hey, i did say i was drunk.

If your video is HDMI based, you could be having issues similar to mine (perhaps not).
However, I cannot tell whether you have more than one competing and potentially conflicting driver from the device list you provided.
My HD audio driver problems occurred when the Nvidia driver got updated recently. Prior to that, my monitor did not have proper and full HDMI support from the Nvidia driver and I, until recently, had to use a DVI converter to access the more acceptible DVI monitor output.
I'm not using HDMI that I'm aware of as the monitor i connected has no HDMI input. I run it conjoined with the laptop for the extra screen space. My issue returned again after a reboot and i think that you steered me in the right direction with the SP1 thing but so far i've not had any luck. the official microsoft update is already installed and i ran the 3rd party analyze and repair tool that your link led me to. It came up saying i had the latest versions of the files and didn't use winusb.dll so it didn't apply a fix. I'm going to have get my hands dirty and try the exhaustive manual repair i think. Thanks for helping me find something that instills hope for success and thank you microsoft for turning my 6 month old laptop into a lobotomised calculator. Their worthless troubleshooters, incompetent support staff and reluctance to accept accountability is a constant and endless source of frustration and in 50 years time the phrase "going postal" will probably have been erased and replaced with "going windows".![]()
So far so good. What i did was once again uninstall all usb connections in device manager. Even the hidden devices. Then i uninstalled service pack 1 and downloaded the usb/sp1 hotfix from microsoft. i installed the hotfix BEFORE installing the service pack as the hotfix basically checks your computer to see if it's ready for sp1 and then makes the necessary changes. Finally install Microsoft Windows 7 x64 Service Pack I and reboot twice. It's only been a few days in but so far so good. I'm able to reboot at will and my studio is back in business.
Did you read the following discussion in trying to fix your USB issues?:
The Windows 7 SP1 USB Driver Bug (what it is and how to fix it))
There are 2 hotfixes to be found from the “How do I fix this?” section (POST #1)? Did you apply one of those fixes?:
6.1.7601 USB Driver Update Fix
I found that the official MS fix had already been applied on my PC by running ‘Belarc Advisor’ and searching the resulting webpage for [KB] 2529073 (F3 FIND KEY). That cleared up any potential confusion as to whether I might be facing an impending problem if I update to SP1. Seemingly, winusb.sys may not be a deal breaker (often not present) if the first two files below are dated appropriately:
See SUGGESTED DIAGNOSTICS (Discussion POST 24):
Run [each line] this from the command prompt:
Code:
cd %SystemRoot%\System32\drivers
dir usbehci.sys usbport.sys winusb.sys
And if any of the files are dated July 2009 instead of November 2010 (or better), then you are affected.
