WIM files
I recenty had to do a compete system restore and the technician saved my desktop and gave me a disc with all my desktop items saved just in case another system restore had to be done. It happened and after I did another system restore when I went to bring up the disc I found that it was in a WIM format. I can not open it, I get a message that states: "Either you don't have a program installed that can open your file, or you may be looking for a new one" Second statement: "Let Windows manage your file" I have surfed around and can't find anything that will work for me.

I tried using 7-zip and can not open file. I had previously went to the page you suggested and really can't understand it. I also have UniBLue Registry Booster installed and can't get a thing out of it. I was told to download 5starsupport... I'm about frazzled

What didn't you understand form the instructins at the link I gave you.
1. Open a Command Prompt.
2. Enter: imagex /mount x:\whatevername.wim 2 d:\mount
x: is the drive the wim file is on
whatevername.wim is the filename and extension of the wim file
z:\mount is what the wim file will be called in Windows Explorer or Computer.
3. To view files and folders
On yourcomputer, start Windows Explorer, and then open the mounted directory. For example,
z:\mount
You can then browse for any file in the .wim and copy it wherever you want.
If this is not clear, please tell me what you don't understand as this is the easiest way I know to access a .wim file.
It does look like 7-zip should also handle .wim files though. What happened when you tried? Perhaps the .wim file is to large for 7-zip?

I know what a Command Prompt is, but don't know how to access it. I kept on working on the problem and downloaded two different 7_zip file manager and a 7-z920-x64. For some strange reason the 920 worked and I was able to get all of the file back. I appreciate the help and tonight I can go to bed, sleep and not curse. Thank you, thumudom
