    Restore to factory settings

    Hi Guys,

I created some recovery discs for an Acer computer. However, when I loaded them to make them work they didn’t actually run themselves. I had to resort to tapping Alt and F10.

What do I do to make the discs run?

Also, the internal recovery system is on my D drive. I read somewhere that if I have got anything else on my D drive (which I have) then recovery won’t work. Is this true? Funnily enough I tried to restore to factory settings yesterday and when I tapped Alt and F10 I didn’t get the correct screen to restore.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

What does the Acer manual say? Most likely the CDs are not bootable and are loaded via Alt-F10 from BIOS.

What else do you have on D: and why? Move it and leave just the recovery data.

    Hi Ztrucker,

    Thank you for your reply.

The ACER manual is pretty hopeless. I can normally do Alt and F10 to restore to factory settings. Do I hold them down or keep tapping them both when machine is booting up?

The CDS are ones I made. Are you saying that I put them in and then press Alt and F10 when the machine is booting up?

I kept stuff on the D drive as a sort of back up because when I restored to factory settings the D drive retained what I had put on it.

    Clear as mud?

Press Alt+F10 together. Timing is important. You need to do it at the right time during the boot cycle. What does the manual say about when to do this?

What is the model number of the computer?

    Hi Ztrucker,

Thanks for your help. I think I am nearly there. I don't actually have to restore at present but I just want to be sure that I will be able to. Your point about timing is I think the crucial one - see below what the Acer website tells me about when to prsss Alt + F10. From what you say I think I have been getting the timing wrong. I have also included below a link to the actual model. Many thanks for your help.

How do I reinstall the Operating System on my computer?

Select models have the ability to have the Operating System reinstalled from a hidden partition built into the computer.

Note: Ensure that all important data is backed up as restoring your system will restore it to the factory default specifications, resulting in lost of any user data which has beeen added or modified.

    To start the system recovery:

    Restart the computer.
When the Acer logo appears on the screen, press the Alt and F10 keys repeatedly.
If you are prompted with a Microsoft Windows boot screen, press the Enter key.
After the system recovery application has loaded, follow the prompts to reinstall the Operating System.
If the ability to reinstall from the previous method is not available or fails, recovery of the Operating System will need to be from Recovery Media.

Note: If your computer does not have an internal optical disc drive, an external optical disc drive will be required in order to recover the Operating System using Acer Recovery Media.

    Restart the computer.
When the Acer logo appears on the screen, press the F12 key repeatedly to enter the computer's Boot Menu.
Press the CD-ROM drive eject button and insert the disc labeled System CD.
    Close the CD-ROM tray.
Refer to on screen instructions to select either CDROM or USB CDROM.
The computer will boot from the Acer Recovery Media
When prompted for the Recovery CD, remove the System CD and insert the Recovery CD.
Note: If there are multiple Recovery CDs, please insert the first Recovery CD.

After the system recovery application has loaded, follow the prompts to reinstall the Operating System.
Note: If you do not have a set of Acer Recovery Media you may purchase recovery media online from the Acer Recovery Media Order Form. If your computer is unable to run the Acer Recovery process, or errors occur during recovery please contact Acer support.

As Ztruker asked; What is the model number of the computer?

    The link you provided is very general. Is it a;
    Desktop
    Notebook
    Netbook

    ??????????

The exact Model Number would be excellent.
