Unhappy Install Software for new mouse

I recently got a new mouse (I believe that it is a micrsoft intellipoint 4000) and I'm trying to install the software that comes as a download for it but it won't install. The software is Microsoft IntelliPoint 8. The error message says "setup must close because as error occurred. Verify that your computer meets the system requirements on the product packaging. Restart your computer and try running setup again. If this error happens again, see help for customer service options. (Error code 1603)"

Frankly I'm stumped. The same software installed on Vista (32 bit) on this computer with no problem. I'm using 7 32 bit which is listed as a supported OS. It's the same download for both systems. I've tried google only to see something about registry keys (which isn't where the article said because that was on Vista-I believe that they where under HKLM/componant). I also saw to let MS update finish & restart. There was giving "system" full access to the hard drive (not the issue) & something about Install the package to a drive that is not accessed as a substitute drive. What does that mean?

I don't know if it makes a different but the installer is automatically extracting the installation files to my secondary drive. I took away the drive letter for that drive and I still got the error even though it was then extracting to C. What to do?

Have you tried running it as Administrator or disable UAC then install?

I've tried running it as an admin (because my default account isn't an admin) & I've actually run the install from the admin account. I didn't try to disable UAC. Might that make a difference? I didn't have to do that on Vista.

It shouldn't make any difference but it only takes a few minutes to try it (and two reboots, one to disable, the other to enable it again. I have mine permanently disabled).

What about installing in Vista compatibility mode? Using Windows 7 or Vista Compatibility Mode - How-To Geek

Disabling UAC didn't help and compatibility mode wasn't an option. I was wondering if that is only an option for installed programs but I'm not seeing that option on any of the programs. The troubleshoot compatibility option on the right click context menu didn't help.

I've also tried uninstalling the driver.

You get to Compatibility tab via Properties of the .exe. It's not a direct context menu entry.

    I know. It wasn't there.

Which one did you download, the .dmg file or a .exe? At Softpedia I ended up with a .dmg file which does not have a Compatibility Properties tab and as it turns out is for a Mac, just like you see. At Majorgeeks.com I ended up with a .exe that did have a Compatibility tab.

I got it from MS's website. It's an exe. I know what dmg's are for.

Compatibility probably won't make any difference anyway, but you should have a Compatibility tab in the Properties dialog for IPx86_1033_8.0.225.0.exe. I do for that and the X64 version, tried them both. Also has the Run as Administrator checkbox.
