Start up disk consistency message problem on Windows 7

    Hi

Using Windows 7 I'm getting a disk consistency check message on bootup. When I run chkdsk it hangs at the same point each time. I think the trigger was when I loaded some files from an external hdd (fat32). I can find support for this problem for XP & vista involving regedit, but nothing for Windows 7. Advice would be very welcome - thanks - Graeme

It just possible chkdsk is freezing because of a corrupt system file.
Try running System file checker. SFC /SCANNOW to check system files for errors.
    Then run chkdsk.
How to on this here SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker - Windows 7 Forums

You could also try Running Checkdisk from the Windows 7 CD

I bought a referb hp laptop with windows 7. It ran fine out of the box, up and down. I created the restore disks, installed norton internet then office pro2010 went to restart and this started. It hangs and will do nothing. I am sending it back but I am here because I told my son, who lives at school, about the problem and he said his new laptop(also hp) I just bought him before school started does the same thing every time he starts it up but his spits some error and comes up and runs fine so I guess he was just hoping it would go away. He is 20 and know's everything but I wanted to look into the problem to see how common it was. I also found out he did not make the restore disks when he got it so will it buy me anything to make them now or is it a deal where it will create a useless mess of them or should I just look into taking his back to where I got it(less than 6 months ago) and hope they give me a new one and start over? I have never owned or worked with a laptop so if Anyone has the time to give me some advice It would be great. Thanks.

    Hi oldken Welcome to D.A.L

If we knew the error message your son Laptop was getting we could better advise on his problem.
But since the laptop is only 6 months old and still under warranty I would advise him to return it for repair.
The only caution to this advice I would add is. If it is software your son has purchased. That is not part of the
software supplied when the Laptop was purchased. Causing the error. Then this will NOT be covered by the
warranty and you or your son could be come responsible for the repair cost.
If they are a good company they will advise you that its additional software your son as added causing the problem.
Then inform you how much it would cost you/your son for them to carry out the repair.
You can make a repair disk at any-time and provided no errors occur during the making of the disk it will work just fine.
All the repair disk does is to use the hidden repair partition on the laptop to restore your laptop to its original factory
condition. Using this option will remove any important files etc on that laptop. So if you decide to do that make sure
you do backups of all the important file on that laptop.
Information on HP recovery disk here Recover Windows 7 Operating System Using HP Recovery - HP technical support (United Kingdom - English)
Finally I would advise you that it is considered impolite to ask a question in someone else's post.
This is called hijacking in forum circles. But since this post as been inactive for over a month it would be considered ended.
Please don't take this as a re-buff we want to help but it would be better and more polite if you start your own post
and not ask for question/help in other peoples post.

    Hope that helps

    Jim

Thank you for the info. Sorry about the 'hijacking' thing. I am guessing there are rules someplace that I did not take time to look into. I have never posted or asked anything on any computer site before. I just read them and hope someone has the same problem. I am 'OLD'(Born before the PC) but not 'really old'(before the airplane). I did see things about closing threads and donations so I guess this is ran by someone and I will look around. Thanks for your time and help.
