Suddenly my screen background picture will not be saved (from any place), nor will be Windows themes. Also - Gadgets will not install. Please help.

Try this:

go to start menu search field
start typing "turn off"
The first few results should contain "Turn off background images." Click that.
[Alternatively, go to Control Panel > Ease of Access > Ease of Access Center > Make the computer easier to see] Scroll down and uncheck "Remove background images

you will get the background originally it was
