Why is my CPU usage at 50%+ even when idle?
Hi I wonder if anyone can help? I built my own computer and after installing Windows 7 and only the drivers for the respective hardware, my CPU usage is constantly above 50% and jumps up and down anywhere between 50 - 100%?
I have a Biostar GF82000E motherboard, with an AMD Athlon II Quad core processor, and also a Nvidia 9400 GT graphics card. For which I have all the up to date drivers.
Many Thanks,

Have you opened up task manager [ctrl + alt + del] to find out what is running it that high? How do you know that it is that high? What kind of security software do you have? Have you scanned for viruses/spyware?

The process 'NT Kernel & System' was running at 50% when i looked at task manager. I could tell that it was running that high because i was using 'All CPU Meter' from AddGadget.com. I used the free version of AVG and run a full scan but it didn't pick anything up.

What is the program name?
-
The Image Name says 'System', the User Name says 'System' and the Description says 'NT Kernel & System'
Thanks,

Is it system.exe? If so as far as I know there is not legitimate windows program by that name so I suggest that you seek help from the security team. Please read this. Unfortunately none of them are on at this time.

It's not called system.exe, its just called System. I have just installed Windows 7 again, completely fresh, as soon as it had finished installing, i went to task manager and its there again, using 50% of the CPU?

I've taken a screen print of Task Manager...

I have also got the HiJackThis Log...

I'm not authorized to comment on HJThis logs which is why they have a section specifically for malware cases however on a fresh system that shouldn't be the problem. I suggest that you disable search indexing because it has been known to consume resources. Personally I have this disabled & I don't even see the need.
