KB955706 SQL server express install problem

    Hi
Since getting my new WIn 7 computer I have been puzzled by a so-called "important update" which repeatedly refuses to be installed (even after disabling the antivirus temporarily).
I not entirely sure that it really is an important update since I am not using a server, just a single computer, (although maybe it relates to the database for the search function(??))
    Anyway the details are
KB955706 (SQL Server 2005 express edition service pack 3)
The error code for the continuously failed installation is 57A
Do I really need this update? If so, how do I achieve it? (If not, I'll simply "hide" it).

PS I have googled this problem and found many half-answers, but none that actually broach the issue of whether it is actually needed in the first place....

    Kind regards
    David

This is a service pack so it should be installed. I suggest that you try the installer.

Well I tried. I installed the net framework thingummy but when I r-clicked and opened the sql exe file as administrator I got the attached fatal error.
    Any further ideas?
Any idea why I need this anyway? - from the explanations I've seen, it doesn't appear to relate to any aspect of computing that I do on my (non-networked) computer
    Kind regards

What does the error say? There is a lot of stuff in that log. Does sql server run on your computer?

As explained, I have no idea whether the sql actually runs on my computer because I don't know what it is supposed to do. Its very name and the configuration programme which comes under the Microsoft SQL Server progamme folder suggests to me that it is only for people who want to adminster a server, which I don't, but maybe I have misunderstood this?. I am gradually tending to the conclusion that I don't need it, but if you could give me some ideas of the sort of thing sql does on a single computer I might be able to say whether it works or not. As to the error - it just says "unknown error" code 57A.

PS I enclose a list (attached jpg) generated from the WIndows InstallCleaner which shows what instances of SQL are installed (but as to the question of whether they are running or not, I don't know at the moment)

It looks like you have visual studio c++ express edition installed, correct? That program likes to install it and I don't know why. All editions of Visual studio as well as Outlook Business Contact Manager install it. It will have some processes running unless you [or I suppose someone else] disabled them. Hit the windows key and r to bring up the run box and type in services.msc. From there you should be able to see whether or not they are running and if so desired stop them. You will need to double click on each entry and change the startup type to disabled or manual to keep them from running on boot up and then stop followed by ok to save the changes. Note however that you might not have full functionality from visual studio and perhaps even errors if you choose to disable them. Disabling them won't keep MS from bugging you about the updates and I don't recommend that you uninstall it unless you also uninstall visual studio. I'll look into the error and see what I can come up with.

I see that you are getting help elsewhere. That is generally frowned upon.

    Hi
Sorry about the "elsewhere" - but it has to be said that most questions on that other site appear to remain unanswered, so I suspect I won't actually be "getting help from" them.

    To the points you raise:
I enclose an image of the references on services.msc to SQL
I didn't see any references to visual studio, so I assume it's not running, unless it has some other name?
    Kind regards
    David

PS I notice that a service called Business COntact manager SQL server is automatically started - should I perhaps change that to manual or disable it?

If you disable that you probably won't get full (if any) functionality of the business contact manager component of Outlook and Outlook might complain about it. That process is the MSSMBLITZ process and it is set on manual. Visual Studio isn't a process listed in services but a program. It should be listed in your start menu. Other than trying to uninstall and reinstall sql server I don't know what to tell you because I didn't find any answers. Perhaps someone else on here will know.

    Hi
Well I don't really use Outlook, so maybe I can unistall that.
There is no programme called Visual Studio on my system.
I wonder if simply uninstalling Outlook will help.....

later: I uninstalled MS Office 2003 - (I had both 2003 and 2007 on my system, but 2007 doesn't have outlook, so that should be OK)
I also changed the remaining "sql" instances on services.msc to "manual" and established that they had not started after reboot. Still no luck installing the allegedly required updates to sql server (and also the service packs for MS Office 2007), so for the time being I have "hidden" them.
I assume the sql one can simply remain hidden since sql is simply not going to be used.
The MS office service pack failures, however, require some looking into - I'll search round DAL for that - any pointers?
