Have you tried Windows Update (Optional).

Although not generally a good source of drivers many manufacturers submitted drivers directly to MS for Win 7.

Windows Update under Windows 7 is changed from previous versions of Windows. MS paid device manufacturers to develop drivers for Windows 7 and if they were not ready in time to make the release date, they are available via Windows Update, so please, tell your Dad to forget his previous prejudice about it and give it a try.

There do not appear to even be Vista drivers for your computer on the Gateway site, so I think you are not going to succeed with installing Windows 7 on it. At least that's what I see. I believe you gave the serial number for your computer, right? If so then it's a Gateway 500S and there are no upgrade paths to Vista or Windows 7.

Also I did find one place where it said the graphics adapter for your system is a GeForce2 MX200, and looking on the Nvidia site, they don't have a Vista or Windows 7 driver either, just Win 2000 and XP.

If you do reinstall XP, run Windows Upgrade Advisor. It will tell you what hardware will or will not work with Windows 7.
