    missing printers

    Hi

I'm running Windows 7 and on first install managed to run a v. old HP Laserjet 4L via a usb port. For reasons various (dodgy and replaced memory) had to re-install 7 and now cannot use Laserjet. I was amazed it worked originally and very pleased. I downloaded a couple of drivers and it would run the test page but would not receive data from PC. Now I suppose I should clear these two entries from the drop down menu in Word etc which shows them - they bug me but I've only myself to blame. They do not show in Printers and devices

    Any help please

Please post your solution so others can benefit from your research. BTW, I have an old 4L, but it did not have a USB port, only a Centronics (parallel) port. What adapter are you using?

Sorry much as I would like to help, how I did it is as much a mystery to me as you! I was clicking away in desperation and suddenly came across a delete in the drop down menue, did that and the phantom printers disappeared.

With regards the Laserjet 4L, it worked perfectly under XP with a parallel to usb cable (purchased from Amazon for less than a fiver}.

Strangely it worked on the initial set up of Windows 7 but cannot get it to run now on second installation, pity because it was a good old workhorse.

If anyone has any suggestions as to how to get it to go I'd be pleased to hear

    Thanks to you all

    Thanks Digerati

What a find, there is certainly a driver for Laserjet 4L so I downloaded it but....... I can still not get it to work. I still want to use my Photosmart C6280 as my default but when I put the Laserjet on the pc seems confused. I click on the LJ and the document comes out of the PS. It seems that as the PS is the default it just takes over - I don't think I could stand having just the LJ on so maybe I will have to consign it to the bin - what a shame

Hmmm, where you able to install the 4L drivers okay? And print to it if set as the default?

    Hi

As I said I think the pc is v. confused - when set to the 4L as default it prints from the Photosmart although I have removed the latter and re-installed, At one stage the 4L printed a test page but the computer would not talk to it and print a file. Then next time a test page came out of the Photosmart but it was pages and pages long - oh what fun, Currently I am back to just having the photosmart loaded

Hmmm, I wish I had a solution. Sorry. Maybe I will have to drag mine out and see if I can get it going. Mine is used off a JetDirect print server, so that might make a difference. USB may not provide the necessary 2-way communications.

Yes I think it is a lost cause. I have spent all afternoon trawling the HP site and cannot find any answers. What bugs me is that it worked fine on the first Windows 7 install and now not a peep. I see that HP say the drivers are included in Windows 7........... When I go into Devices and Printers it shows up as an unknown device with a yellow exclamation mark. I also find an error 43 message but that is no help as I can't find a work around for that. Oh dear, thanks for your help but it looks like the workhorse is for the rubbish bin!
