How many Computers can I install Win7 on?

    Hi

When I get Windows 7, I would like to install it on this Computer but as this Computer is quite old I would like to build a better one from scratch.

I have heard (don't know if it's true) that you can only install Windows 7 on one Computer, so my question is will microsoft allow you to either change Computers or allow you to upgrade your system.

    Many Thanks for your help.

You can move it from one computer to another, you just can't have it installed on two at the same time. This is the same as was true for XP and Vista.

You can still get a license key here. With another key you can put it on another computer. I want to say that with an RC key you can put it on multiple computers, but I don't know that for sure. I know that the Vista RC 1 key could be used on 10 computer. I don't think that they will care considering that it is free. But with the ability to get more keys it doesn't really matter.

Are you talking about Windows 7 once it's released or Windows 7 pre-release, like RC1 or RTM? If a released version, you cannot simply download a key, you need to purchase another license.

The key that townsbg's pointed you to is for the RC1 version (Release Candidate 1).

Then the key townsbg pointed you to wont help, and what I stated originally applies.

One license, one computer. If you want to move that license to another computer you have to uninstall it from the first one, then you can install it on the new one.

If you want it on two computers, you can buy another license.

Oh I guess that I didn't read that right. Yes if you are talking about the upcoming RTM that you buy in stores that is usually for 1 computer unless you buy a special volume license from MS. If you have a copy of the download you can put the release candidate on your computer (provided it is powerful enough) but it becomes inoperable sometime next year. I forgot when.

    Hi Guys

Thank you both for the info, I am not on a network and will only be using one computer at a time but really just want the option to switch it from this computer to a better one when I build it.

So based on what has been said so far, it looks like this will be possible.

    Many Thanks
