I'm not familiar with how Benchmarks work so I assumed that it does make a difference.
Benchmarks work the way the program author designs it to work. It may only measure disk performance, or RAM performance, or overclocking limits, or it can be made to emphasize one product's features over a competing product. So benchmarks can be good, or bad, depending on the true objective of the benchmarking. If truly for unbiased testing of real world tasks, and not a commissioned program by a product's marketing team, then benchmarks can be a valuable tool for consumers.

Since this would be a comparison of Microsoft operating systems, comparing how each perform all the many common, but various tasks would be helpful. This especially includes testing how well a product fully utilizes the latest in computing technologies. As it happens, today's computing is very graphics oriented, and will continue on that track. This is why today's GPUs have 100s of millions more transistors on die than CPUs!

That said, because of badguys, Microsoft is forced to weigh security over performance. So while benchmarking may show one program is faster than another, security may take precedence. One of the costs of Freedom, I guess. Fortunately, while we too are forced by badguys to pile on security programs, lots of horsepower is available, and within financial reach, of most people.

    Hi ,

I'm tempted to start using Windows 7 on my laptop , obviously it's the RC1 but have any of you used it for gaming , etc . Are windows addressing driver and program compatability issues . I'll be sticking to vista on my main system , personally I think Vista is a great OS . It's just I'm currently starting an MCSE and have a decent working knowledge of xp and vista already and wondered if Windows 7 was worth a try . How bad are the incompatability issues with Windows 7 ? I'd be using the system mainly for word processing , browsing and I have it networked to my main sytem so I can watch films in bed .

    System spec :

    dual core 2 ghz x 2ghz
    3 gig ddr2
    120 gig HD

I'm currently using it for my graphic work and gaming and there are absolutely no compatibility issues. It's very stable and well worth the switch from Vista.
