What would be the best audio file to be used to save music from audio CDs into the hard disc in order to maintain quality and space at the same time.Thanks for your help.

Hey,
If you use iTunes, you can use the AAC encoded, using iTunes Plus settings. This is far higher quality to the MP3 codec, but doesn't take up an awful lot more space.
If you don't use iTunes, I believe Microsoft's WMA is better than MP3, but I'm not expert with WMA.
