Opening files on a ftp site

This is the first time using FTP, I have probably used it many times downloading stuff of the Internet and not even knowing it. What I mean as using FTP, for the first time, I mean going to the run box or cmd and typing in ftp:\\ftp:\\anysite.com enter user name > password > the ftp. site shows 2 dirs., logs, private and public, but when I try to open any of these files, I get page can not be displayed all the time. Right at the top of the page of the ftp. site it says > FTP root at ftp.anysite.com > To view this ftp. site in Windows Explorer > click > page > click > Open ftp. site in Windows Explorer, when I do that I get > This FTP. site can not be viewed in Windows Explorer.

Why can't I open any of these files? When I right click on any dir. and pick the option to > open or > open in new window... then their are only 2 dirs. showing can't see logs, private or public, but their is a link at the top that says > Up to a higher level dir.... When I click on that link then I see 2 dirs., logs, private and public.... no file opens.

Running Windows Xp Home, Sp2, local disk which is (C) free space 30.5GB and I don't have or ever used file sharing software. The ftp. site that I want to open or download from keeps giving me the message > page can not be displayed the website is done in html and java scrip.

I have the user name and password for the ftp site, so I should be able to open the files listed as private, but I can't open anything. I want to also change the password which I have permission to do so and change the font size for the website.

Any help would be really really appreciated a lot..

With windows based ftp clients you can usually drag them to a folder on your computer, edit them, then drag them back which will overwrite the file.

Personally, I'd use a proper ftp client such as FlashFXP or SmartFTP.
