while attempting to log into my ftp windows explorer stops responding leaving me unable to log in, its not an isolated problem as i have several ftp accounts with different companies still the same, i have tried the standard problem of firewalls and internet security but no success. the accounts work fine on other pc's, and i have also tried internet explorer to access it but no success.

try using some of the many free ftp programs available. Try cute ftp - i got it from www.download.com - free, easy to use, and no spyware.

thanks, but it is a firwall problem, if i turn it off as soon as the pc loads tempted to totally re-install the firewall.

Just incase you didn't try it yet, I'd recommend typing ftp://usernameassword@yourdomain.com. I had the same problem once, and it worked for me.
