    unknown files

I work on WinXP, Internet Explorer8
I apply the CCleaner regularly when closing my computer after a day’s work. Till today I didn’t use the Recuva program from the same, Piriform company, but it was installed on my computer.
Today I needed to recover some files which I deleted too early, and I tried to do it with the Recuva. I was astonished to find over 10000 (ten thousend!) files on my disk, ready for recover, most of them partial pictures, lines, backgrounds and also pictures from various commercial and other sites, some of which I never visited.
I cannot understand how such files entered my disk and I want to know how to prevent clogging my disk with them, and, first of all, how to get rid of the files already there.
    Please advise
    Thanks

Those "files" don't take any space on your computer.
Recuva sees only files, which has been deleted.
As you probably know, deleted files are not really erased, but their headers are removed and a space, which they were taking is marked by Windows as a free space, so anything can be written there.
Where do those "files" come from?
    Hard to say.
Many images are stored in temporary internet files.
You never downloaded those images, but your browser did.

Yes that is perfectly normal. If you simply delete a file using windows (or ccleaner) it is still on your hard drive until it is overwritten because, like Broni said, all windows (or any OS) does is to remove the header & mark the location as available. If you are really worried about it in Ccleaner you can have the program erase the files by clicking on Options & then Settings. Click on Secure File Deletion (Slower) and then select the overwrite type in the drop down. Note that Ccleaner will take longer to run and will take longer with the more passes that you choose. This won't shred files that you delete using windows but you can search for a program to do that for you. Rescuva has the option to shred deleted files however for whatever reason there are always files that it can't shred.
