Re: Weird stuff trying to remove programs etc.

    Hello Owen!!

I think we have it! After following the above instructions and concentrating on the line in question I had no success after running peperfix 8 times. Still had the same line in hijack this and 9 items with peperfix. I then found this web site and proram http://computercops.biz/downloads-file-330.html to help with the peper virus. Ran it and was then able to successfully run adaware and delete unwanted items. I have now rebooted several times with no errors and here is the latest log from hijack this, which I "think" is clean...

That was my next move, thats the Uninstaller for the old version of Peper. You must have had the older version, its hard, if not impossible to distinguish between the two from a Hijack This log.

And congratulations, thats a clean log, how are things running?

Things are better, I can now run programs I could not before. However, when I boot up and walk away from the computer when I return there are about 10 popups on the screen without me even accessing a web page before hand. Also, having issues with MS Media player since downloading IE6. It was bringing up an unwanted web page asking me to install it (Second Thought I think it was). No longer doing that, but whenever I click on the icon to try to open the media player, it goes to setup of the media player again. I have run it a second time, but still getting setup for it.

I am about to start working on that now.

Thanks for the help, I appreciate your time.

I think this is where the popups are coming from because the all seem to start with ip 69.20. Still not sure what is up with MS media player, will work on that some more.

    Thanks,

    Go to: C:\WINDOWS

In that folder is a file called hosts. Open hosts with Notepad.

There is some text explaining what the files do from Microsoft, leave that intact and an entry that will say:

    localhost 127.0.0.1

    Leave that also.

Edit the files to get rid of the lines shown in the Hijack This log. Then click File> Save and then reboot and post a fresh log.

Ok, this is dirving me crazy! I found the file, the original host file from windows has a .SAM extension. There was also a backup file created by spybot hosts.20041111-194041.backup. There is also a file with no extension that shows file type FILE. I went into this file and there was alot of stuff that I did not like...

    127.0.0.1 www.igetnet.com
    127.0.0.1 code.ignphrases.com
    127.0.0.1 clear-search.com
    127.0.0.1 r1.clrsch.com
    127.0.0.1 sds.clrsch.com
    127.0.0.1 status.clrsch.com
    127.0.0.1 www.clrsch.com
    127.0.0.1 clr-sch.com
    127.0.0.1 sds-qckads.com
    127.0.0.1 status.qckads.com
    # Start of entries inserted by Spybot - Search & Destroy
    # End of entries inserted by Spybot - Search & Destroy

No localhost entry. I tried to paste the contents of the original host file into this file but it did not save the changes. Then I tried to rename the file but the computer just kept creating a new "host" file with the junk I don't want. I then went to safe mode and made the changes that were saved there and I created a host file that contained the following...

    # Copyright (c) 1998 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP stack for Windows98
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
    # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
    # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
    # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
    # space.
    #
    # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    #
    # For example:
    #
    # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    127.0.0.1 localhost

I booted to windows normal mode with the dsl modem off and the changes were saved. Then I removed all of the auto startup options for AOL so it would not come up in the taskbar. Rebooted, during reboot turned on dsl modem. When getting to windows I now get the following in the "host" file...

    # Copyright (c) 1998 Microsoft Corp.
    #
    # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP stack for Windows98
    #
    # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each

    # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
    #

    #

    # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

    127.0.0.1 sds-qckads.com
    127.0.0.1 status.qckads.com

Which of these lines should I get rid of and how can I get rid of them? I have tied over and over to remove all but 127.0.0.1 localhost
but I cannot in windows normal mode, even with the modem off. Then when I remove them in safe mode they come back when the connection is established.

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
Go to the hosts files, open it up and then erase these lines:
    69.20.16.183 auto.search.msn.com
    69.20.16.183 search.netscape.com
    69.20.16.183 ieautosearch

    Then click Save.

If this doesn't work, try it in Safe Mode.
