Undocumented feature
I recently bought MKS_VIR 2004 from the English distribution channel in US http://www.stormbyte.com I viewed all the options, tools, update features, and quarantine features. I stumbled on an feature that is not documented in the instructions manual.
When there is a Critical Virus alert MKS_VIR 2004 has this handy feature integrated into the software. MKS everyday once a day connects to the server to check for a regular update. In the mean time every couple of minutes there is a request sent to the server if there is a emergency update available in case of a virus outbreak. Once the server responds that there is an update the program immediately downloads the new updated virus definition.
To all the people that have a firewall up and using MKS_VIR 2004 you need to allow mks_menu.exe to connect using UDP on port 2000 to have this feature enabled.
To be honest, the feature may sound fantastic but it will just slow down your internet connection constantly checking when its not necessary.
My antivirus program checks for updates every 6 hours which is often enough. Even if there is an emergency update, 6 hours is enough of a gap to keep you protected.
It's using udp protocol, the same protocol that is used to send dns queries. You will not even notice when mks_vir is contacting with the server.Originally Posted by owen
