Google/search redirection, etc.

    Google/search redirection, etc.

Like several others I have experienced a malware infection. It appeared as one of the phony anti virus trojans, AVSecuritySuite. I did Internet research and, while in safe mode, the first thing I did was open IE and change the LAN settings to remove the proxy server directive. I then updated and ran Malwarebytes and it seems to have removed the majority of the registry keys, etc. I manually removed three keys that were mentioned as offenders in other postings, but that Malwarebytes did not remove:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftInternet ExplorerDownload "RunInvalidSignatures" ="1"

    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionPoliciesAssociations "LowRiskFileTypes" = ".exe"

    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionPoliciesAttachments "SaveZoneInformation" = "1"

I also saw instructions that indicated the following was a bad key and should be deleted:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\PhishingFilter "Enabled" = "0"

However, I kept this key and reset its value to "1". I also retained the “EnabledV8” key that is in the same location (its value was already set to "1"). Should I remove either of these keys entirely? Should I reinsert any of the three keys I removed and/or change any of their values?

Long story short, I eventually seemed to get rid of the AVSecuritySuite intruder and the popups, etc. are gone. However, I still have the issue with redirected links chosen from search results, in my case Google. Also, occasionally, I will get a random IE window suddenly pop up and open, showing a screen indicating a virus infection. It does allow me to close it without any trouble. I ran Malwarebytes again, not from safe mode, and I also tried using something called UnHackMe, but I find it very confusing to use. Maybe I am not doing it correctly?

I have enabled the SmartScreen Filter in IE 8. Once I get home today I can run Malwarebytes, HijackThis, and download and run GMER and post all of the logs here. I understand that I run there from normal mode and not safe mode. Is there anything else I should do? I am thinking about uninstalling UnHackMe from the Add/Remove Programs application. Should I do this prior to running the three items listed above?

    Thanks

Sorry, forgot to mention that I also removed all Java programs and updates, and downloaded a fresh copy of Jave 6 just in case that had become infected.

Well, I have bad news to report. I ran HijackThis and saved the log. I then ran Malwarebytes. It found no threats. I saved the log. I then downloaded GMER, which scanned for about 2 1/2 hours. I checked on it every so often and it seemed to be working fine. It was scanning the Windows system files when I last checked. Then when I came back, the computer had rebooted itself, all programs were closed, and it was on the desktop screen. So I do not have the GMER log. I will have to try again but this means I may not have results to post until tomorrow.

I also noticed that when I open IE now after about 30 seconds a new IE opens with some random advertising website.

I should mention that I did not disable my AV software, McAfee. I was not told to do this so I let it run as normal. If this should be disabled please advise. I also did not remove UnHackMe.

    Here is my HijackThis log:

    Your HJT version is outdated.

    Download HijackThis:
    HijackThis - Trend Micro USA
by clicking on Installer under Version 2.0.4
    Install, and run it.
    Post HijackTHis log.
Do NOT attempt to fix anything!

NOTE. If you're using Vista, or 7, right click on HijackThis, and click Run as Administrator

    Skip GMER for now.

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
    1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
    2. Close any open browsers.
    3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
      • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
      • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
      • Close any open browsers.
      • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
      • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
      • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
    4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt"

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

Here is the ComboFix log. As a side note, ComboFix said it detected root activity and wanted to reboot the computer while it was scanning. I clicked OK, it rebooted to my desktop but did not appear to load any programs. At then end of the scan everything loaded. I copied the log and opened IE to post it. Almost immediately a new, secon IE window opened and took me to a rouge marketing website and a window popped up informing me that IE ws not my default browser and asking me if I wanted to set IE as my default browser.

Other info: I checked in my default processes section and it indicated that my Current Browser was my Default Browser. To be on the safe side I selected IE from the list and hit OK. I got a quick pop up that said IE was being set as my default browser. When I opened the process list again, it showed the same settings; Current Browser is Default Browser. I assume that IE is my default browser now if somehow it was changed. As for the rouge IE window that opened on its own and had a pop up asking me to set my browser, I closed it from the task manager since I could not close it at the window until I responded to the Set IE As Default Browser pop up.

When I turned off McAfee to run ComboFix, I noticed that all of the boxes were checked Enabled except the one for scripts for IE. When I turned it back on after ComboFix was complete, I noticed that all boxes were checked Enabled, including this one. I don't know if it was enabled by default or if something that ComboFix did resulted in it being checked/enabled. As I was leaving home I noticed that it McAfee initiated a scan, I guess because it had been turned off. I left it running with no applications open. I will check the log when I return in a few hours and see if it detected anything and post the results.

And the link How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs with instructions on closing McAfee shows an outdated Security Center. It changed with the 2010 products and doesn't look at all like that anymore. It might confuse some people who are not familiar with how to use McAfee and just install and forget about it.

Thanks for your help so far.

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
Download TDSSKiller and save it to your Desktop.
Extract its contents to your desktop and make sure TDSSKiller.exe (the contents of the zipped file) is on the Desktop itself, not within a folder on the desktop.
Go to Start > Run (Or you can hold down your Windows key and press R) and copy and paste the following into the text field. (make sure you include the quote marks) Then press OK.

    "%userprofile%\Desktop\TDSSKiller.exe" -l C:\TDSSKiller.txt -v

If it says "Hidden service detected" DO NOT type anything in. Just press Enter on your keyboard to not do anything to the file.
When it is done, a log file should be created on your C: drive called TDSSKiller.txt please copy and paste the contents of that file here.
