    Unable to remove program folder

I recently found a program was not working properly, so set out to delete it, and replace with another copy. The full saga can be found in the thread "Add/Remove Blues" in XP Help, so might be quicker for the mod here to read that than me retell the whole story.
I run pretty regular system scans using Spybot, mbam, and Avast. I try to do it at least once a week if not more frequently.
Avast has recently, and right up to yesterday found multiple instances of Win32:Malware-gen, which it sees as a virus/worm. The name suggests Trojan to me but I am an amateur, so that opinion may not be worth much.
The program I was trying to delete was called Westnet Usage Grabber (Westnet is my ISP) and it is supposed to check in every so often and update me on where I stand on my download allowance. Over a couple of weeks the result displayed was increasingly at odds with what I thought I was doing, and logging on to my account confirmed there was a significant difference between the ISP's figure and what the utility was displaying, hence the decision to replace it.
There was one file (self generated by the app) which I had to remove manually (this is after Add/Remove did a partial removal and advised me that the remainder could be deleted manually. I was able to manually remove the program folder contents, with the exception of one folder which will NOT be removed. This has resisted both Eraser and Unlocker, and each time I try that pair it changes its name, which is suggestive of some sort of malware.
Now back to the malware found by Avast. I was sceptical about these results as they were appearing in places which had scanned clean many, many times, and they were all located on a different drive. The places it was yesterday were in a couple of downloaded warez (where AV apps frequently find nasties) files, a couple or three downloaded music files ( can't ever recall a "hit" in that sort of file), and in system volume information for that drive (E: btw).
Today I deleted the warez, I am done with that stuff, more trouble than they are worth, plus most try and buy apps are reasonably priced and I liked getting paid for the work I do, so I reckon those people deserve it too. After deleting the warez I ran a full scan with Avast, which turned up clean, completely.
So I have also downloaded and run the latest HijackThis and the results are here:

If any of that indicates something of significance, I would appreciate some advice.
Oh just one other thing, the people who make the utility program are adamant that the copy from their site, and from my ISP's site are clean, and I believe them. I just am not going to reinstall another copy until I rid myself of the remnants of the old one.
And one other thing that may be of interest. On two occasions I started the computer to find my homepage hijacked by Ask. On both occasions I used ERUNT to reset the registry to the previous day, and got my homepage back. I don't know why malware hijacks homepages, it is not exactly subtle!

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
    • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

NOTE 1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.

    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
    • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

    Hi Broni,
I have followed the instructions re Combo Fix.
I have also pasted the further instructions into a word document, and ditto for the how to disable instructions from Bleeping Computer.
The "ResetTeaTimer.zip" link does not work, so please let me know what to do to restart Tea Timer after a Combo Fix scan, will a restart of the machine do the job?

    Hi again Broni,
Please disregard that post, the Bleeping Computer instructions include how to reset manually so I will go ahead with the scans and be back soon.
    Thanks

    Progress ...
I followed the instructions, and despite me disabling it , when ComboFix said Avast was still running, I checked, it WAS off, but ComboFix said it would continue "at my own risk", this is scary.
When ComboFix restarted the system Comodo and Avast started, I stopped them again, while ComboFix was creating the report, was this necessary, or no longer an issue?

And just out of curiosity, how do you hide a hyperlink under a word eg Here in your first post?

I assume, you're running Comodo firewall only?

    Uninstall Combofix:
Go Start > Run [Vista users, go Start>"Start search"]
    Type in:
    Combofix /Uninstall
Note the space between the "Combofix" and the "/Uninstall"
Click OK (Vista users - press Enter).
    Restart computer.

    ================================================== ===========

    Print these instructions out.

NOTE. If any of the programs listed below refuse to run, try renaming executive file to something else; for instance, rename hijackthis.exe to scanner.exe

***VERY IMPORTANT! Make sure, you update Superantispyware, and Malwarebytes before running the scans.***

STEP 1. Download SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users:
SUPERAntiSpyware.com | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!

    * Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
    * An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
    * If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here: SUPERAntiSpyware.com - Database Definition Information.)
    * Close SUPERAntiSpyware.

    PHYSICALLY DISCONNECT FROM THE INTERNET

    Restart computer in Safe Mode.
To enter Safe Mode, restart computer, and keep tapping F8 key, until menu appears; select Safe Mode; you'll see "Safe Mode" in all four corners of your screen

    * Open SUPERAntiSpyware.
    * Click Scan your Computer... button.
    * Click Scanning Preferences/Control Center... button.
    * Under General and Startup tab, make sure, Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts option is UN-checked.
    * Click the Scanning Control tab.
    * Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):
    - Close browsers before scanning.
    - Terminate memory threats before quarantining.

    * Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
    * On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
    * On the right, choose Perform Complete Scan.
    * Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
    * After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click OK.
    * Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click Next.
    * A notification will appear that Quarantine and Removal is Complete. Click OK and then click the Finish button to return to the main menu.
    * If asked if you want to reboot, click Yes.
    * To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
    - Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    - Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    - If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log. A text file will open in your default text editor.
    - Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.

    * Click Close to exit the program.
    Post SUPERAntiSpyware log.

    RECONNECT TO THE INTERNET

    RESTART COMPUTER!

STEP 2. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: Malwarebytes.org to your desktop.
(Malwarebytes is free to use as a manual scanner. Payment is only required if you wish to have it run and update automatically which is not necessary for our purposes)

    * Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
    * At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
    * Post the log back here.

The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
    Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

    RESTART COMPUTER!

    STEP 3.
    Post fresh HijackThis log.
NOTE. If you're using Vista, right click on HijackThis, and click Run as Administrator
Do NOT attempt to "fix" anything!

DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

    Hi Broni,
    Okay, point by point,
Yes I am only using Comodo as a Firewall.
I attempted to delete ComboFix in the manner you described and it would not delete, I ended up dragging it into the Recycle Bin. I just noticed that there is still a folder on the C drive, should I delete that?
I went into Safe Mode, as Administrator, and scanned the C drive with SUPERantispyware. I already had the app, and updated it prior to the scan.
Despite having the checkbox ticked to Save Empty/Clean logs it did not save a log. After just under 3.5 hours I was a little miffed, but it really doesn't matter, there were no nasties found.
That brought me to fairly late in the evening and I needed sleep badly, so I did the mbam scan (full) of the C drive this afternoon. It also found nothing, here is the report:
    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.44
    Database version: 3687
    Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3
    Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.18702

I also already had this app installed, and updated prior to the scans.
Also, FYI, I had occasion to contact mbam direct about something to do with the app, too long ago to recall exactly what. They were quite helpful and the person I dealt with advised me not to do full scans, as this can make the app hang. He said that a quick scan was sufficient, "we know where the malware hides."

I then restarted and did a HijackThis scan, which follows:
Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2
Scan saved at 2:31:07 PM, on 2/4/2010

So, apart from this one folder which I can't delete, I am inclined to think that the machine is clean. I will of course defer to your experience.
I look forward to hearing from you.

There are a couple of other new folders on the C drive which I am unsure about.
One is called Config.Msi and contains 2 .rbf files, the other is Qoobox which has some text files for ComboFix and things like a folder for Quarantine, and BackEnv.
What are these, and do I need them anymore?

I just noticed that there is still a folder on the C drive, should I delete that?
    Yes. Delete Qoobox as well.

    One is called Config.Msi
config.msi what is it? [Archive] - PC World Forums
    Q. I have a mysterious folder called config.msi that now holds nearly 78 megabytes of files. These files all end with the .rbf extension. What are they, and can the contents of this folder be safely deleted?

    A. Microsoft's developers, in their infinite wisdom and generosity, created this folder and these files on your system to allow you to back out of an upgrade to Office 2000. In the event that you experience problems with your installation, these files allow you to uninstall Office 2000 and go back to your previous version of Office.

If you are confident that your Office program is working properly, you can delete this folder and all the contents.

I would suggest that you may just want to rename the folder to config.msi.old and see how things go for a week or so. If all is well, go in and reclaim that disk space.
    1. Download Temp File Cleaner (TFC)
Double click on TFC.exe to run the program.
Click on Start button to begin cleaning process.
TFC will close all running programs, and it may ask you to restart computer.

    2. Go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

    1. Disable your active antivirus program.
    2. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
    3. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
    4. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
    5. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:

    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases

    6. Click on My Computer under Scan.
    7. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
    8. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
    9. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt before clicking on the Save button. Then post it here.

    HI Broni
Did I really say Config.Msi is 78MB? It is actually 101KB, there are only 2 .rbf files there so I doubt it could restore much. My Office installation has been stable for as long as it has been on the machine since the last Windows installation, July last year.
I have TFC and will run it ASAP.
I will also run the Kaspersky online scan and post results in text form.
Not clear on the purpose of the "My Home Page" link.
Thanks, I will be in touch.
