Unable to remove program folder

re: Unable to remove program folder
Surely too cold and raining all the time...
-
Now there are quite a few things I could say to that, but we are nice on this forum, so I shall refrain. 32ºC here atm, if you are interested, and it is 6:15pm! February in this city sucks, especially after what was either the hottest or second hottest January on record. As Mark Twain said, "there are lies, there are damned lies, and there are statistics."
And the Weather Bureau are very good at the latter. .02mm of rain on Sunday morning stopped us beating a 35 year old record for the longest dry spell
Okay, okay, I will get to the point.
Here are the OTE results:

Did it work? I await your pontification. Now that is a good word.

Pontification, huh?...LOL
Yeah, you got it!
Your computer is clean
1. Turn off System Restore:
- Windows XP:
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check "Turn off System Restore".
5. Click Apply.
6. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
7. Click OK.
- Windows Vista:
1. Click Start.
2. Right-click the Computer icon, and then click Properties.
3. Click on System Protection under the Tasks column on the left side
4. Click on Continue on the "User Account Control" window that pops up
5. Under the System Protection tab, find Available Disks
6. Uncheck the box for any drive you wish to disable system restore on (in most cases, drive "C:")
7. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click "Turn System Restore Off" on the popup window to do this.
8. Click OK
2. Restart computer.
3. Turn System Restore on.
4. Make sure, Windows Updates are current.
5. If any Trojan was listed among your infection(s), make sure, you change all of your on-line important passwords (bank account(s), secured web sites, etc.) immediately!
6. Download, and install WOT (Web OF Trust): Safe Browsing Tool | WOT Web of Trust. It'll warn you (in most cases) about dangerous web sites.
7. Run defrag at your convenience.
8. Read How did I get infected?, With steps so it does not happen again!: How did I get infected?
9. Please, let me know, how is your computer doing.
-
Okay ...
System Restore disabled and machine restarted. System Restore reactivated, though I wonder why I bother. ERUNT is more compact and malware has yet to learn to hide there, that I know of.
Windows Updates current.
C drive defragged. Even though the analysis said it did not need it, I hate those red bits.
WOT installed
Yet to visit How I Got Infected, but was I actually infected? There were some suspect items, which have been deleted, but none of those were responsible for the stubborn folder.
I am saving OTM and SystemLook for possible future use.
The machine seems to be behaving itself.
So, thank you very much for your help and pontifications. See if you can work that into other threads.
-
You're very welcome
I'm glad to see you using ERUNT
Good luck
-
Hi Broni,
Nice to see Resolved against this thread.
I have visited the "How did I get infected" link, and checked out some of the associated links.
I already had Securia PSI, but used the online version to get an updated version of Adobe Reader. I have to say I am unimpressed with the "passengers" they offer to include in the download. I can understand a little outfit like Piriform including a Yahoo toolbar, but for Adobe to be offering third party apps is a bit rude.
Yes I am using ERUNT. I am pretty sure it was on this forum that I heard about it, from another user. I think I already mentioned that my homepage was hijacked twice (by Ask) in the space of 10 days in November. Simply went back a day with ERUNT and problem solved. Initially I tried to get back to my homepage by typing Google in the search area. It asked why I wanted to use Google, and that was curtains for Ask.
I don't know why malware hijacks homepages, it ain't exactly subtle.
Thanks again for all your help, now be a man and get a wetsuit!
