Read the Hijack This Logs post at the top of this forum and install Spybot S&D. Run it as instructed then post a fresh log after a reboot.
-
Sorry I thought the Spyware doctor scan would do. Here is a fresh log after
scanning with Spybot S&D and another scan with Ad-Aware.
Sorry about the first one.
One other thing. I can't seem to post replys from home either. The browser just hangs much like it does when I try to log on to My Ebay when I try to submit my reply.
Thanks,
John

Click Fix Checked
There is nothing particularly worrying in the log...
-
Owen,
Thanks for the quick followup. I followed your instructions and had
Hijackthis fix the lines you suggested checking in the log. My browser
seems to be more responsive and I can get to and use sites such as Mapquest
that I could not use before. On Ebay I can get to their main page and even
browse items for sale (I could not do this before) but the browser still
refuses to let me sign in to Ebay or use the My Ebay section. I have
cleared all cookies, temporary files and history under the Control
Panel\Internet Options Icon I have also set all Internet Explorer Options
back to the defalt settings nothing seems to work. I have also downloaded
Mozilla Firefox bowser and tried using it to sign on to Ebay with no luck.
I have DSL, a wireless router and another computer that accesses the
Internet through the wirless router. It is an older computer running
Windows 98 and it was also having the same problem signing into Ebay.
I know my Ebay account information is correct because I can still use it to
sign in from my computer at work.
If you have any other suggestions that might help me solve the problem they
would be greatly appreciated.
BTW, attached is another Hijackthis log of the computer after I fixed the
problems you suggested.

Thanks,
John Lane
p.s. I am still not able to post replys to your site from the computer we
are working on. (Just one more data point to consider.)
-
These are the type of problems that I can never understand because even though the log is clean and there seems to be no reason why this is happening, it is.
One program that I think could be causing the problem is Zone Alarm, its worth a try.
First of all download Sygate from here.
Then print/save the information in this page for uninstalling. It is critical that you do this correctly or else there could be issues with other firewalls.
Disconnect from the internet and uninstall Zone Alarm as per instructions. Then install Sygate. Once you have installed Sygate, open the main firewall and at the bottom there will me the names of a few running programs. Right click a program called Microsoft Generic Host for Win32 Services and select Block.
Then have another go at Ebay.
-
Owen,
Thanks for the advice. Before trying your advice I decided to try a couple of experiments first. Since the wireless router has a NAT firewall I decided to turn off Zone Alarm and try to log on to Ebay. I still could not log on. Next I turned Zone Alarm back and bypassed the router taking the output of the DSL modem directly to the Ethernet port on the machine. Doing this I was able to login sucessfully to my Ebay account.
Although I now seem to know the source of the problem I have not had any luck ridding myself of it. The wireless roter is a Netgear MR814v2. I went to Netgear's site and downloaded and installed the latest firmware and I tried temporarily disabling the 64 bit encrytion I was running. Nothing seems to help. As long as the router is in the loop nothing I am doing seems to resolve the problem. I guess this also explains why the other machine on the network has the same problem.
Any suggestions you have for how to get around this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
John

This is not really the sort of thing I am good at. I've never had to deal with Networking so I'm therefore useless with it.
I have a had a little search and I believe there are some settings for the Router that need to be changed. But the changes weren't very specific. The person in question contacted NetGear support and they told them what to change.
Before you contact Support, first power down the router and disconnect everything from it (unplug it, etc). Leave it for an hour and then reconnect it and have another shot.

Owen,
Thanks for the follow-up. I will try Netgear support.
Thanks for all the help you have given. I have at least fixed quite a few problems thanks to your help. Sometimes the only way to troubleshoot is to eliminate the things that don't cause the problem. I am a electronics engineer so I am somewaht used to this type of grief.
Thanks,
John

Owen,
Just a follow up to my last post. I have finally solved the mystery. It seems that the netgear router has a setting called MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit). The default setting is 1500. With this setting My Ebay does not respond. The trick for me was to lower this setting to 1400. Once I did this I can now sucessfully logon to Ebay.
Thanks again for all the help resolving this problem.
