    [Inactive] infection.exe

This morning Norton advised me that a site was trying to connect and advised allowing it. Followed by 2 more. When I try to open Excel, Word or many others. I get a window message saying XXXX.exe is infected. (excel, word or whatever.exe). I now get boxes appearing as and when advising that a file is infected, do I want to run an anti-virus program.

This has only now identified itself as SWP2009. In addition, I am now getting a Windows Security alert which leads me back to SWP2009.

How can I clean this up? Let me add, I am a very elderly amateur and need treating gently!

    Thanks

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
    • Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.

NOTE. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
    • Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

    Download HijackThis:
    HijackThis - Trend Micro USA
by clicking on Download HijackThis Installer
    Install, and run it.
    Post HijackTHis log.
Do NOT attempt to fix anything!

NOTE. If you're using Vista, right click on HijackThis, and click Run as Administrator

I think I am having nightmares. Yesterday my computer had little windows appearing every few seconds to inform me that .exe was infected. I could run the internet but any .exe files would not open and a tab offered SWP 2009 to clear my computer. This morning, everything is back to normal.

    Is this possible? What next?

Either I am going mad or my computer is. this morning everything worked perfectly but 10 minutes ago the "infected .exe" message reappeared, along with the icon for SWP2009.

I appreciate your previous response but although I can download combofix to a download file, I cannot open it, nor indeed any program/file/folder, with a .exe suffix.

I have downloaded all my personal correspondence, Word and Excel files, to a memory stick. Will that now be infected? Is it safe to load those files on to another computer ow will I infect that?

Where do I go from here?

Don't touch that stick for now.

Rename combofix.exe to combofix.com and try to run it again.

I greatly appreciate all your help but frustration finally drove me to desperate action. I contacted Norton/Symantic and paid them to clean my computer by remote. It took them over 2 hours to do this but it appears to have been successful.

Thanks to all you helpers and a Happy Christmas to all.
