Very slow pc, large memory usage,60% disk space use

    Hi guys,
I have received your help before and now I am asking for help on behalf of my nephew. His pc is running extremely slowly. Something (according to Norton) is using 60% of the memory when no programs are obviously being used.
The pc is a HP Pavilion as follows:
    Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz 512MB of RAM
HP Pavilion (C): 70.9 GB, 41.0 GB used, 29.8 GB free
HP Recovery (D): 5.37 GB, 4.47 GB used, 926 MB free

Some stuff I remember from when you helped me before - I have installed and run CCleaner and also Spybot S & D (which found nothing serious)

My nephew wasn't shutting his pc down at all so I am concerned that with it constantly on, and with a constant connection to the internet, it may have been hijacked. Any help will be valued.

    Below is the HJT log:

    * Open Windows Defender
    * Click Tools
    * Click General Settings
    * Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
    * Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
    * After you uncheck this, click on the Save button
    * Close Windows Defender

Once your system has been deemed free from malware, you can re-enable Windows Defender's Real Time Protection.
Please disable Ad-Watch if being used with Adaware, as it may hinder the removal of some HijackThis entries. You can re-enable it after your computer is clean.

    To disable Ad-Watch:
    1. Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray and select "Restore Ad-Watch".
    2. At the bottom of the screen there will be two checkable items called "Active" and "Automatic".
      • Active: Switches Monitoring On or Off without closing
Automatic: Switches Automatic Blocking On or Off
    3. Uncheck (red X) both items.

    * Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE or HERE

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

    * Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and zLaunch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
    * The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
    * The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    * Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

    Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

    Thank you, Neal

I followed your instructions exactly. Ad-Watch wasn't being used so there was no need to disable it.

Just to let you know, there is now a slight increase in the speed of the pc although IE is still very slow to respond (if at all). I haven't checked anything else.

    Neal,
Just a bit more information that might help you help me:
Had warning this morning that the virtual memory minimum was too low; it takes about 45mins from turning pc on to it being ready to use (which is why I think my nephew just left it on all the time); the first click on the IE icon results in non-response - the second attempt (without closing the first) and the browser will open within 30 seconds.
Apart from the memory warning, these conditions existed before I contacted you.
I hope this info is useful.
    Cheers,
    Dan.

Disable tea timer also please on spybot.

Run hijackthis and click on "scan system only" button and put checks next to these:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

Please close ALL browser windows (including this one).

Everything closed out but hijackthis and click on "fix checked"

    Reboot your PC

Not seeing anything else so let's dig a little bit deeper:

Visit this page below to familiarize yourself to the tool below and download from one of the links provided.

A guide and tutorial on using ComboFix

If you have previously downloaded ComboFix,please delete that version now.

It is IMPORTANT that it is saved directly to your desktop

    Close any open browsers.

    Disconnect from the Internet.

Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.

Disable your antivirus program and any realtime malware scanners and script blockers now

    How To Disable

Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.

When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.

That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.

Re-enable your anti-virus and re-connect back to the internet and post the combofix log.

    *Note*
In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix, please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again.
Some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper.

    Hi Neal,

    Thank you for your reply.

I was preparing to do as you instructed and I went to BleepingComputer to download ComboFix. Clicking on the BleepingCompute link to the download results in the following message on that page:

ComboFix is not available for download until an issue with the program has been resolved. Please be patient while the developer fixes the program and makes it available once again. As more information becomes available, we will update this page.

DO NOT attempt to download ComboFix from sites other than BleepingComputer.com and Forospyware.com!

Other sites hosting ComboFix are not authorized mirrors and are hosting outdated copies of ComboFix that contain a bug that may render some machines unbootable. Using unauthorized mirrors of ComboFix puts your computer at risk of not booting again. Please wait for the official version to be fixed and released again.

We will also announce when ComboFix is available on our Twitter and Facebook pages
    .

However, Forospyware was still allowing me to download it. Which is correct? I am also concerned because, if I had chosen Forospyware to download from first, I would never have seen the warning.

Is this something that you and your collegues at DAL are aware of? Please advise.

    Thanks, Dan.

Yep do not use combofix for the time being.

    Instead:

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
    ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

    * Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
    * This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
    * Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
    * Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
    * Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
    * Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
    * When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:

    * If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
    * After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
    * Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
    * Close Dr.Web Cureit.
    * Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
    * After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply. You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report.

    Hi Neal,

    Thanks again.

I did as you said. The Dr.Web Cure-it may have been a slightly different version than the one you described as I didn't see the icon you referred to. Also, I wasn't given an option to select any drives to scan for the complete scan.

I first chose the express scan (which took over 3 hours!) - this may have been the result of what was found. I also saved logs of both the express scan and the complete scan and they now follow in that order:

    Express scan

Now that the pc has been rebooted it is a little bit quicker, but still nowhere near what it should be. It still takes over 30 mins from turning the pc on (or rebooting) to it being ready to use. Once it is ready, though, it is much quicker to open and run programs.

I was also able to install service pack 3 for XP which had not been done and, when I had tried a couple of times before, had always failed to install.

As always, any help and advice will be gratefully received.

    Dan.
