    Well. It's that time again

Wife just told me her Acer Aspire One running XP Home SP3 with Macafee security center is running out and they want 49.95 to renew. She found a site called http://www.easy-uninstall.com/ to unistall Macafee. Is is wise to use it.

Usually at this stage of the game, I download Avast, SpywareBlaster, and MalwareBytes and use these as protection for Windows. I have used Avira on her gear also, but it nags and takes over auto start too much. I told her to use Xp firewall as her firewall.

Since you guys are more hip on Windows than I, is the game plan good enough or am I behind the times when it comes to freeware protection.

Told her not to download or run anything till i hear back from you guys. Happy Trails.

This is Linux land. On a quiet night, you can hear the Windows machines rebooting.

Thanks Broni, I gave her a step by step list on what to do.
    1. Download installers
    a, Avast
    b. Spywareblaster
    c. Malwarebytes
    2. Don't run installers yet till uninstalling Macafee
    3. Download and install and run Macafee uninstaller
    4. After reboot
    a. run Spyware installer
    1. Update and enable all protection
    b. run malwarebytes installer
    1. Update and run quick scan
    c. run Avast installer
    1. Get product key and activate
    2. Update and run AVI updater also

She should be good to go after that I think.

It's a good idea to physically disconnect from the internet just before running McAfee uninstaller.
After restart, turn Windows firewall on, and reconnect to the net.

I don't like Avira simply because of the Upgrade nag upon update :bs_lame: [does anyone know of a way to disable this other than buying it???] however after installing Avast FF would run fine for about 15-30 min this disconnect from the internet and usually wouldn't terminate and if it didn't terminate I would have to reset the computer. Uninstalled Avast and now no problems. I had AVG 7 installed before [I hate V. 8] but once when I really needed it it failed to find the virus that I knew my Mom had.

Oops I didn't know how old this is.

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
AVG ver. 8, and up is known for having various issues, so I don't recommend it anymore.
Avira's upgrading nag may be annoying, but as for protection level, Avira is probably the best among free AVs.
