XP Home VERY Slow....
Hello,
First question here, I am confused... I am fixing a family members PC. They said it had been getting progressively slower. It is a two year old Dell with XP home and not much installed on it. Here is what I have done:
Ran Windows Update and loaded all updates
Installed SP2 for XP
Ran Adaware
Ran Spybot
Ran avgas spyware
Ran Hijackthis
Loaded and updated Norton Antivirus 2007
Performed Full system scan
When I installed Norton it appeared it had an issue with a Backdoor.Ranky.X, which it looks like it took care of. Things definitely appear better but when the machine boots it still seems to take 5+ mins for the desktop icons to appear. Windows still seems to be slow... Not sure where to go from here??
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Please post your hijackthis log and I will take a look.

Thanks for the reply but I think I am back to a h/w or s/w issue and not a security issue. The hijackthis log was clean etc. tonights status is this, I deleted any extra programs, printer etc. again and miraculously it seemed to fix the reboot speed and then after a couple of restart tests on shutdown there was what looked like a memory error, it went too fast couldn't read it and now it has slowed again... any help would be appreciated. Not sure where to post now.....
Thank you.
If it helps since I have been working on it I have not seen the "user login prompt" with the icon for her account except when it just seemd to be fixed and now it is gone and only a Windows welcome screen comes up at logon.
