Hi - my pc's been very slow lately. Just installed Avast av ad ran a scan.

I don't see any threats, but you have some Norton leftovers.
Run Norton Removal Tool: Download and run the Norton Removal Tool

Then, open HJT, and checkmark:

Click Fix checked button.

Please, post some computer info:
- processor type, amount of RAM (hold Windows logo key, hit Pause/Break key)

Restart computer.
Post fresh HJT log.

Still slow. My bottom taskbar is blue after stat-up and the icons on desktop show up slowly.
Baloon shows up- no firewall. But when I go to Security center...fiewall is on.

240MB of RAM is your main problem. XP needs at least 512MB of RAM to run OK, 1GB preferable.

12MB free (out of 37MB)....I assume GB?

Couple of things, you can do for now.

1. Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Unselect Cookies.
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Unselect Cookies.
Click the Empty Selected button.


If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Unselect Cookies.
Click the Empty Selected button.


Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

2. Run defrag.

Sorry, your right 1.3GHz...and 12GB free

Ran ATF---cleaned 60MB
Defragged. restarted. Still slow loading up.
seems to run better after plentyof time warming up.
Like hiting START the 1st time to get to settings....took awhile for the menu to pop up. 2nd time is faster as usual.

True, I should get more ram.

But I'm not sure why its running signifiantly slower than the last few weeks.
I tried recently to change some start-up items, maybe I should put them back on..and test again.

Putting back startups will only slow the computer down.
I can see your startups from HJT log, and there are only few of them.

Started up faster today. I didn't add any more start-up items.
Before posting my hjt log, I read in instructions to run an av scan. Since my AVG7.5 was running out, I instaled Avast. Don't know if Avast uses more memory than AVG. But since insalling Avast, I keep getting baloon saying firewall is off...but security center shows it's on.
Think my next step is to go ahead and get more RAM. One of the first things Tosiba tells you in the user maual is how to install more Ram. Why did't they do it the first place.

I don't know how old your computer is, but few years ago RAM was still expensive, so the manufacturers were giving you just as little as possible.
