    Looks legit to me.

If you don't want to click that then just go to their web site:

AVG Free - Download AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition for Windows XP and Vista

It's legit, but I'd stay away from upgrading to ver. 8 of AVG.
Unfortunately, with the newest version, AVG became bloated program with number of unresolved issues.
I suggest, you go for ONE of these:
    - Avast! free antivirus: Download FREE antivirus software - avast! Home Edition
    - Avira free antivirus: Download Free Antivirus Products

    - free PC Tools Firewall Plus: PC Tools Firewall Plus - Free Firewall Download

    - free Comodo Internet Security (firewall + AV): Free Firewall Antivirus Software Download by Comodo

If you decide to install Avast, or Avira, make sure, Windows firewall is turned on, or use PC Tools Firewall Plus.
If you decide to install Comodo, make sure, Windows firewall is turned off.

IMPORTANT! Make sure, you use only ONE antivirus, and ONE firewall.

Oh...kay,now i don't know what to do lol.

I've had AVG for years and am quite happy with it.
I've heard version 8 has issues, but surely i'll have to download it now,as 7.5 is expiring, so i'll not get updated and therefore not be able to be protected against the latest threats

Think i'll just go for 8

    Cheers guys, Dave.

    Hi UK Dave...

I got hit with the AVG upgrade notice like you except I was just using AVG Anti-spyware...I was told that AVG Anti-spyware is now being bundled with AVG Anti-spyware as a suite and that I would not longer get updates to my 7.5. I started using it back when it was Ewido Anti-spyware. Ewido was a very good Anti-spyware tool and back in the day was I was checking HUT logs it was a great tool to help the cleaning process. After AVG bought out Ewido they came out with AVG Antispyware and since I had a licensed copy of Ewido I got a free AVG license.

Anyways I'm starting to babble...the reason I'm mentioning this is that AVG, with this upgrade, was forcing me to use AVG Anti-virus\Anti-spyware suite. I already had an Antivirus program, NOD32, and I didn't want to get rid of it to install AVG. I gave up suite tools back when I had Norton and I did not want to go back to using a suite again and rely on one program to protect my computer. The reason being that if the suite "pooched" then I had no protection. Long ago I learned that layered protection is the best protection. Unfortunately these days it's hard to get an Anti-virus program without Anti-spyware...even now my beloved NOD32 4.0 now has Anti-spyware and I am not happy with that, again for the reason that I don't like suites. I guess when my license is up for renewal I'm going to have to check out whats available. Comodo looks good as it's just an Antivirus bundled with a Firewall but the nice thing is they let you pick what part of the suite you want to install.

On most of my PC's (and I have a few) run the following...
    - NOD32 4.0 - Anti-virus\Anti-spyware
    - Comodo BOClean - Anti-malware
    - SUPERANTISpyware - Anti-spyware (Scanner only)
    - Malware Bytes - Anti-spyware (Scanner only)
    - SpywareBlaster - Anti-spyware
    - Comodo Firewall - Software Firewall
    - Linksys Router - Hardware Firewall

The Laptop that I using to type this uses the same configuration except for one thing, instead of NOD32 4.0 I'm testing Vipre Anti-virus & Anti-spyware. Again normally I don't go for suites but I'm testing this software.

Hopefully I have not confused you even more...

Edited...Hit the post button before finishing...I just upgraded all my PC's from NOD32 3.0 to NOD32 4.0 and it has Antispyware...great another suite.

    Ok,the saga continues..

The pop up came up saying our time is up, so we must upgrade to 8. Fair enuff, what the heck,go for it.
Tried it and it wouldn't let us get a free version..need to upgrade via payment etc..No further updates will be available.

    Thought,sod this,leave it..lol.
Anyway, since then,(3 days ago), my 7.5 has updated twice
what's all that about?!! Is 7.5 still ok then? I'm totally confused..was the pop up a snide?

If i can upgrade to 8 (free version?) i surely would do,but at the minute i don't seem to be able to!
    Here's todays (none updateable) update!
