Possible virus
Windows XP SP2
Hi
I was using the PC in my bedroom when it locked up and I had to switch it off at the mains to restart it. When it got to the desktop windows popped up that warned of a change in a registry entry so I said no and the PC rebooted. Got to the desktop and more windows popped up about registry changes which I again said no to and the PC rebooted again.
I then decided to do a restore to previous good config. On reaching the desktop the wallpaper came up but no icons and the screen was locked.
I put in the XP disc and tried to go into safe mode but was unsuccessful. I tried to do a repair install but that wouldn't work.
At this point I was not certain that it was a virus and I wanted the data from the drive so I didn't want to do a clean install.
I then decided to take the drive out of this PC and put it into the PC I have downstairs as a slave drive to copy the data I wanted to keep before formatting it.
I put the drive into the downstairs PC and booted up. I got to the desktop and went into my computer to check the slave drive was there. Found it OK and went to make a folder to copy all the data to. Tried to get back to the data files but couldn't and then the registry change windows popped up. Said no but PC reset itself. On getting back to the desktop I tried to open AVG to run a scan but as soon as I clicked on it the PC reset.
Managed to get into safe mode with this one and run AVG in DOS. Found a few viruses and deleted them but on rebooting I'm still getting the resetting when I click anything on the desktop.
Is there some antivirus program I can run from a floppy to get rid of what I assume is a virus? I really want to keep the data on the two drives.
I would really appreciate any help.

Your issues may be a specialized case of a usb antivirus:
"usb antivirus" remove resolve - Google Search
Some of your issues may not necessarily be virus related (search results excluding 'virus' term):
"PC resets itself" -virus 2009 - Google Search

Hi
Managed to sort out the PC's.
I got into safe mode with the downstairs PC and ran AVG to delete the worm. Took the drive out and put it into another PC as a slave and copied all the data. Then did a clean install of XP onto the original partition. Took the HDD out of the upstairs PC and put it in the downstairs one and repeated the operaion.
So I've managed to save the data and got both PC's running again - phew!
