My computer runs slowly and often just 'hangs'
any thoughts as to whether the registry might be borked?

There is nothing in your HJT log that is of concern except, potentially, the non-standard location of your system files:
D:\WINDOWS\WINDOWS\
Did you recently reinstall XP or has it always been installed at the above location?
If you have been 'fiddling' with your registry and made a mistake then that would not be expected to be apparent. If you have such concerns, please consider doing the following:
System Restore for Windows XP
Your best option may be to try a ‘system restore’ point (if available) to a date before any known problems or before you started performing any recent fixes:
Click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.
Check Restore my computer to an earlier date> Click Next.
Choose the date before you performed any recent fixes and click Next and Next again.
REBOOT.
NOTE: If you use System Restore and don't like the new system state, you can undo the process and restore the machine to the system state it had before you ran System Restore. Alternatively, you can run System Restore to change the system state to a different restore point.

Thanks for the response Vincent; I couldn't see anything that was 'wrong' but thought I'd ask you chaps as you see alot more of this stuff than I do.
I suspect that having ZAP/AVG/SpybotS&D/AdAware all set to fairly stringent levels and running a 1.3GHz processor, on a 133 BUS, with only half a gig of RAM isn't helping.
XP is on the 'D' drive, cos I have two HDD and the 'C' disc is where I keep user stuff, with the 'D' running system software.
I think it's time I bought a new processor and some RAM and/or another PC with USB2 as well.
Please consider this one closed.
