My pc seems to have slowed down, espescialy when online.
Have I got anything running in the background thats not supposed to be there?

Any suggestions as to other 'system' or user programs that are not a real neccesity would be appreciated too.

Don't install any Toolbars, or other programs, should it ask you!Just uncheck the option of installing the Yahoo toolbar.
It will put a shortcut on your Desktop.

Uncheck cookies

Before first use:
Select Options then Advanced.
UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

Click on CCleaner to start it. Then click "Run Cleaner", just use the windows tab up front by default.


Then Reboot (Exit)

Might give defragging a try to speed things up some, if that doesn't work then we can dig deeper.

Ive carried out what you suggested, but my pc still seems alot slower than it used to be.
Im thinking that maybe I have too many programs running in the background, but am unsure which ones are needed/not needed and how to go about turning these unwanted ones off.

Open Hijackthis.

Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.

Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.

Click the "Save list..." Button.

Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.


Make sure you only have one firewall running.


PopUpStopperFreeEdition, might be having conflicts with windows defender and adaware.


This next scanner is a small program and is easily uninstalled.



* Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE or HERE

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and zLaunch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediatly.

Look at all the security programs, most is not needed. AVG is way out of date and a new version is out now, I would uninstall AVG and get AVG8. Spywareguard has not been updated in years and should be uninstalled. XoftSpySE should also be uninstalled. You should run the symantec uninstal program as you have remnenets of that on your PC and will cause slowness and conflicts with AVG.

I would keep spybot S&D and update it, Windows Defender and get AVG8, keep spywareblaster and update it regularily, ,plus your sunbelt firewall(good), make sure windows firewall is not on as well. Only one firewall should be running at a time. Only one anti-virus should be running at a time. I would also keep MBAM as in the free edition it does not run in the background and takes very little space and use it as an on demand scanner only.

Cheers Neal, Ive deleted all that you advised me to, and installed AGV8 as instructed.
The pc is alot quicker than it was, I suspect that it is still not as quick as it should be, but then with the rubbish that I have installed and taking into account the age of my pc and the limits of it, I cant realy complain.
