    Smitfraud-C. & Outlook Express

Back on October 22 I had posted with problems that appeared to be related to smitfraud-C. and my Outlook Express.

I have spent the last 6 days working through a possible solution with Tech Support Guys (ComboFix, HJT, etc.). The problem persists with no change in my ability to get any mail. In addition I have had periodic difficulty with getting online. This is critical since we run a small business and use email & www as our link to customers.

Vincent deduced that the problem might have been related to my SpanFighter.

I am currently not able to receive any mail and am wondering if you can help me work thru this.

Is is quite possible that your 'Outlook Express' (OE) database(s) have become corrupted and accordingly has very little to do with malware. You might want to try creating a new user profile and new OE setup.

Or you could try fixing OE:

You might also find more specific assistance on this in the 'XP Forum'.

    Vincent:

Our computer was custom built by a manufacturer and the OS software was installed at the factory. Can I reinstall Outlook Express or XP without the discs?

That is certainly a very poor arrangement since you paid for a legitimate?? license. If you have a COA (Certificate of Authenticity) sticker on your PC box, you might be able to re-install with a same version generic/non-proprietary copy of XP (Professional, HOME Version, etc.) or see what Microsoft might be able to do for you; but you might be missing key drivers with this 'solution'. Most vendors often provide a means to acquire the install media (DELL, TOSHIBA, and other vendors) either offered for a fee when first purchased or subsequently. Are you sure that there isn't a separate recovery partition installed on your hard drive somewhere?

A new user profile and new OE configuration might also result in a non-corrupt/usable OE implementation - worth trying first.

You may be able to reinstall OE without installation disks but certainly not XP. See:

reinstall Outlook Express - Google Search
How to Reinstall Outlook Express (and Internet Explorer) - About Email
Fortunately, you can install a new copy of Outlook Express if you can make Windows believe that what you install is a new version, or apply the latest service pack that contains a full install of Outlook Express again. This will mean different things on different systems, so make sure you get the right download and install the right version:
I would certainly suggest you get more opinions on this in the 'XP Forum'. Or, consider trying another email client that fits with your requirements (POP3) if your main issues have been mostly and likely OE related - possibly a FIREFOX email client:

    Thunderbird - Reclaim your inbox
    thunderbird pop3 - Google Search
