At my wits end... think i've got a virus.

Unhappy At my wits end... think i've got a virus.

Good evening! I'm writing with the hope that someone will be able to help me... About a week ago, my AVG Anti-virus program ran on start up, as usual, and indicated that I had a virus. It went through the steps to remove it and after running a check of my system again, both in regular and safe modes, no viruses were found. However, ever since then my internet has been messed up. I can access the internet for about 5 minutes upon start up, but after that my connection dies. I've tried connecting to other networks and have gotten the same result so I know its the computer and not my modem or router. I've run Hijack This and posted the log below. Any thoughts you can come up with would be MUCH appreciated!!! Thank you ahead of time! - Katie

my AVG Anti-virus program ran on start up
You are also still running Norton/Symantec which can usually be expected to be a serious cause of problems and/or instability (by running two (2) similar functionality tools at the same time). Was 'zonealarm' also a recent addition?

Was the 'Symantec' tool antivirus only? Try uninstalling one of those tools (Norton?) and see what happens:

Post a revised HijackThis LOG and any current observations if further assistance is required.

Hi there - thank you for trying to help! I did as instructed and went into Add/Remove Programs and got rid of Symantec and Norton items. I then logged off and back on to encounter the same problem. I downloaded the Norton Removal Tool, ran it, looged off and back on.... same internet issues. So, I ran Hijack This again and posted the string below.

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
I see no further detectable issues in your current HijackThis log. That log is rather short - if you have used 'msconfig' to disable certain running processes then potential issues may be hidden from my determination.

'Zonealarm' can become a problem after certain updates have been applied or due to certain restrictions invoked in that tool. Might be advisable to temporarily uninstall that tool to see if matters improve.

Otherwise, you could try the following:

    * Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE or HERE

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    • Once the program has loaded, initially select the often highly productive"Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
      ….. AND/OR
    • It is also highly advisable to run the longer ”Full Scan” in addition to the above scan.
    • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
    • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    • Make sure that everything is checked , and click Remove Selected.
    • When disinfection is completed , a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart(See Extra Note).
    • A run log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs TAB in MBAM.
    • Copy&Paste the entire report(s) in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.
    • Please post any current revised observations.

    Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.
