    smitfraud-C.

I have had no problems with my computer for quite some time. However, just yesterday I experienced pop-ups encouraging the download of Antispyware2008. By using my older but current version of Spybot I discovered the presence of a bug called--smitfraud-C.. Using Sticky's advice notes and a DAL contributors advice I downloaded all new spyware software and the DAL contributors suggestion of Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes discovered several bugs and I let Malwarebytes fix them.

Somewhere, I read that smitfraud could infect my email. This morning I tried to download my mail and found that I couldn't. Is it possible that my email has been infected?

My system is PC based, XP operating system and I search on Mozilla--receive mail on both outlook express and outlook.

I read that smitfraud could infect my email.
No - it is the malware that is often transmitted by email. Did you make sure you ran the 'FULL' MBAM scan and not just the 'quick' scan.

Please do an online scan (scan only tool) with Kaspersky WebScanner
    [Internet Explorer required]

    Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    • Now click on Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
        - Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
      • Scan Options:
        - Scan Archives
        - Scan Mail Bases
    • Click OK
    • Now under select a target to scan:
      • Select My Computer
    • This program will start and scan your system.
    • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
      • Now click on the Save as Text button:
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Apparently, your spamfighter found malware which it treated as spam.

Maybe best to uninstall 'spamfighter' and then delete the following file if it still exists:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{029FEBBF-4DE7-4BAE-86DE-C6AC8A770FF6}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\SPAMfighter.dbx

    Reinstall 'spamfighter' if desired.

Completed both tasks. Still difficulty with send/receive messages.

You have been a great help but I fear the dx remains the same.

I appreciate your staying on my case.

I also reinstalled Spamfighter. Maybe I should do this all again?

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
    Vincent:

My Outlook Express indicates repeatedly that there are 337 messages to download but can get past #28---time after time.

I believe the bug is still in the computer?
