Hi,

A couple days ago I managed to pick up a trojan virus. The main culprit was something called "brastk.exe". I was able to get rid of most of the trouble through a combination of AVG 8.0 and Super Anti-Spyware. However, last night AVG Resident Shield picked up a trojan in my System Volume Information folder. I sent it to the Virus Vault. This morning I ran Hijack This. Here's the log from the first run:

After that, I updated Ad-Aware, AVG, and Super Anti-Spyware and ran scans with all of them. Ad-Aware spotted some old favorites, such as CWS, Favoriteman, etc., and I removed all of them. Super Anti-Spyware identified a trojan in my registry, which turned out to be the 04 line above with "brastk", and I removed that. AVG found no viruses, but Resident Shield found another trojan in the System Volume Information folder, and I sent that to the Virus Vault as well. Upon reboot, none of the utilities found anything critical, and I ran Hijack This again and got this log:

My 2 questions are:

1. Other than the System Volume Information folder, is my computer now clean?

Regarding the System Volume Information folder, my understanding is that I need to turn off the System Restore function, reboot the computer (which will wipe out any malware residue), and then turn the function back on, and run the scans again--if nothing is found, then I'm clean. Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

• Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select "Full Scan", then click Scan.
• The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Make sure that everything is checked , and click Remove Selected.
• When disinfection is completed , a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart(See Extra Note).
• A run log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs TAB in MBAM.
• Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

2. Regarding the System Volume Information folder

I generally do not recommend turning off 'system restore' unless absolutely necessary. I wouldn't be inclined to take that action for only one known item which has probably already been dealt with. Sometimes a bad restore point may be better than none at all.

Also, on the System Volume Information stuff, AVG Resident Shield ultimately found 4 objects on Thursday and Friday. The Resident Shield warnings came up every 6 hours or so, and each time one did I sent the object to the Virus Vault. They're identified as Trojan horse Agent.3.R, Trojan horse Generic11.ATUN, Trojan horse Generic11.ATUM, and Trojan horse Downloader.Generic7.AXHU. That last one was found Friday evening around 10PM. Nothing has shown up since, and I've left all 4 objects remain in the Virus Vault. Opinion?

1. I've been unable to connect to the VirusTotal website so I went to Online Malware Scan. I entered:

2. I uninstalled the old java and installed 6.0 Update 7. Hijackthis log shows the correct version.

3. The link you gave me for DSS leads to a page not found. I checked around and found this on deckard.geekstogo.com

Deckard's System Scanner interacts with a specific rootkit (tdssserv) in a way that may make your system unusable (altering the svchost netsvcs registry entry). This download link has been removed until a fix is released by Deckard. For your own protection, please do not attempt to download this tool from other sites.

WE will leave that or similar analysis alone for now unless a new 'System Volume Information' item appears. If items do appear, note the RP#s (restore point #s) and report the line items such as listed below. That will allow us to determine if they are recent or not (recent restore points present a higher risk):

Seemingly random filenames that aren't found in web searches can often be malware. Very difficult to know with the lack of feedback not forthcoming. Might you be getting periodic popups?

3. Paste file copy to the desktop (right click on blank spot>paste).
4. Resubmit file copy to Virustotal or other site.
5. Right click file if necessary and adjust file properties (general TAB) as necessary (hidden?).

1. I haven't had any more System Volume Information items appear, but I still have the 4 that did in the AVG Virus Vault. All 4 of them have the same Restore Point: RP284.

2. As to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\APPLICATION DATA\vsfifsrw\zirancfg.exe

No, I haven't had any pop-ups at all. In fact, except for my computer rebooting itself shortly after start-up last Thursday and me running a "routine" AVG scan shortly afterward, I wouldn't even have noticed I had an infected computer. None of the stuff usually associated with the malware I've found has been occurring.

Anyway, I was finally able to connect with Virus Total and submit zirancfg.exe. It also said the file was 0 bytes. I searched with Windows Explorer as per your instructions and the file was not found anywhere on the computer. Also, none of the anti-virus/malware/spyware utilities have picked up on it at all. Only HijackThis seems to note its existence.

While the file does not appear to be present, the folder "vsfifsrw" is. It has nothing in it. It was created the day or the day after my computer got infected. This is interesting because there was another folder in my Program Files directory that was created around the same time, and it had only one file in it, a piece of malware that Super Anti-Spyware caught and quarantined. It seems that this is a similar situation, except that there's no file inside. Should I just delete the folder? Or should I use HijackThis or something else to get rid of it?

Also, some of the malware I've found is still in the quarantine folders of both Super Anti-Spyware and Anti-Malware. Can I remove those files at this point?

Did as you instructed with HijackThis and fixed the entry. Rebooted and ran HijackThis again and the entry was gone. Deleted the folder. Ran Anti-Malware and got a clean scan.
