    Trojan.Win32.Obfuscated.gen. Again! Help anyone?

    Hi All,

I have attached a HJT file below for perusal.
Basically I had been suffering from the Swizzor trojan (as Trojan.Win32.Obfuscated.gen), load of pop-ups and lost internet conection. I removed Comodo pro but pc wouldn't allow ZoneAlarm to install so happy for now to persevere with XP firewall or Netgear modem/router firewall (better?).
I changed from avast to Kaspersky AV (paid for) and Kaspersky flashed up
Trojan.Win32.Obfuscated.gen on a number of occasions and dealt with them.
I also removed some Windows Live applications (inc one with CiD attachement!) and regained internet.
However I am now getting Trojan.Win32.Obfuscated.gen again! I have internet connection.
Am I correct in thinking I should scan with 'System Restore' turned off?
I have downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and it, Spybot S&D and AdAware cannot find anything so any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers.

Look in Add/Remove Programs (Control Panel) and see if there is a CID entry – remove (uninstall) it.

The following tool will not necessary fix any or all of your popup issues but will at least provide potentially valuable diagnostic information:

Please Download NoLop to your desktop from one of the links below...
    Link 1
    Link 2
    • First close any other programs you have running as this will require a reboot
    • Double click NoLop.exe to run it
    • Now click the button labeled "Search and Destroy"
<<your computer will now be scanned for infected files>>
    • When scanning is finished you will be prompted to reboot only if infected, Click OK
    • Now click the "REBOOT" Button.
    • A Message should popup from NoLop. If not, double click the program again and it will finish. Please Post the contents of C:\NoLop.log

--If you receive an error, "mscomctl.ocx or one of its dependencies are not correctly registered," please download mscomctl.ocx to your system32 folder and then rerun the program.

Let us see/review what is loaded on your PC:
    • Run HijackThis and Click Open the Misc Tools section button.
    • Then click the Open Uninstall Manager… button.
    • Click the Save list… button. Save uninstall_list to your desktop.

    • Open the Uninstall list file and post in your next reply, please.

    Hi VopThis,

    Thanks.

    NoLop found nothing.

    Only:
    HijackThis 2.0.2
    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Skype™ 3.8
are showing in the uninstall list. Sorry, I don't know what this is supposed to tell as I have more progs/applications than that.

Here is a fresh HJT file too.

I currently have nothing to go on.

NoLop report and FULL uninstall list may still help provide some clues. Definitely appears to have some initial relationship to 'nolop' issues (most of which may have been initially fixed). The full FILE PATH of any items still determined to be malware may also provide some avenues to explore and consider.

Otherwise, here is the body of search results related to this issue:
    "Trojan.Win32.Obfuscated.gen" - Google Search

    Hi again, VopThis,

    Thanks for looking.

    The list of three applications

    HijackThis 2.0.2
    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Skype™ 3.8

IS the FULL uninstall list from NoLob.
I have no idea why as there are plenty more on the pc.

I looked up your google link. I have been to some previously when I did my own research before posting here.
Kaspersky does flag it when it appears and allows me to delete those particular files so looks as though it might be a case of persevering on my own from here then.

I really appreciate your assistance and I'll certainly make sure I get back on here to advise if/when I sort it out for good.

    Thanks again.

    Gary.

    The list of three applications

    *HijackThis 2.0.2
    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Skype™ 3.8*

_IS_ the FULL uninstall list from NoLob.
The requested uninstall list should be from having used HijackThis as instructed and not from NOLOP. I have never seen such a 'short' result before - maybe you used the wrong application. You could try running 'CCleaner' (also see install and cleaning instructions, below) - it also can produce such an uninstall list:

Tools>Uninstall>'Save to text file' (on desktop)

Kaspersky does flag it when it appears and allows me to delete those particular files
If you list the FULL FILE PATH NAMES, I might be able to be more helpful. Some leftover badware FOLDER names may also potentially be listed by the NoLop LOG - I have requested this twice now.

    Clean out TEMPORARY FILES procedures:
To clean your temp folder, recycle bin, etc..please download this free tool:

    CCleaner CCleaner - Download

    Install Options:
    • Don't install any Toolbars, or other programs, should it ask you!
    • Just uncheck the option of installing the Yahoo toolbar.

It will put a shortcut on your Desktop.

Do not run CCleaner until requested later.

Run CCleaner preferably in SAFE MODE (reboot tapping the F8 key after the beep).

Select the ‘Options’ BUTTON option (top LEFT), ‘Advanced’ BUTTON, and then UNCHECK the ‘Only delete files in Windows Temp Folders older than 48 hours’ (often, the latest download traffic could be the bearer of bad content – RESET back to default after this particular cleaning).

Select the ‘Cleaner’ BUTTON option (top LEFT), if not already selected. Use the ’Windows’ TAB up front by default.
    • Uncheck ‘Cookies’ option (advisable)
    • Optionally, Uncheck ‘Recently Typed URLs’ option (potentially still useful)
    • Click the ‘Analyse’ button.
    • Thereafter, click ‘Run Cleaner’ after you have reviewed what it proposes to clean.

Sorry, I've never used NoLop before and what with trying a number of different things I appear to have got confused!

I had already used CCleaner in the process of trying to sort this so that should be easily obtainable. I admit that I DID NOT follow the instructions laid out by you. As I had already used CCleaner I just looked to get rid of anything that I didn't want/need. Again, sorry.

As mentioned previously NoLop finds nothing.

I shall try again and look to do as advised this time.
Thank you for your patience (though I detect that it may be a trifle thin currently)

    Cheers, Vincent.

    All the best,

    Gary.

Let us know how your PC is doing.

Your extremely short 'uninstall list' is very odd, indeed and should not be the case (although I've seen this before, on rare occasions). It is not obvious how to 'fix' this. That may make uninstalling other 'unlisted' applications very difficult. You may now have to mostly rely on Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility for any future uninstall issues.

You may want to try the following tool:

Use the System File Checker (SFC) :
(typical runtime is 30 minutes) - please read over all instructions before proceeding.

Sometimes when you install third party software, it may overwrite important operating system files. This can cause instability - or worse. Windows XP includes a command line tool that you can use if you think this may have happened (for example, if you get a message box warning that there is a problem with a .dll or the system just seems unstable). Here's how to use it:
    1. Click Start | Run.
    2. In the Run box, type/copy&paste:
SFC /scannow (notice the space plus slash).
    3. Windows will scan all protected Windows files to verify that they are intact and in their original versions. If they're not, corrupt, missing or incorrect files are replaced. You may be prompted to insert your Windows XP installation CD if your Dllcache folder (where Windows keeps a copy of essential system files) has become corrupt or has been deleted.

To avoid the possibility of having to dig out and insert the OS CD, you can copy the i386 folder from the installation CD to your hard disk, and just point Windows there to find the files it needs. For instructions on how to do so, and more info about scannow, see:
scannow sfc - LEARN how to use SFC.EXE (system file checker) in this article!
