Use 'Avast' or 'AVG8' but not both. Such a combination can create the effects being noted. Uninstall one of them.

Let us see/review what is loaded on your PC:
    • Run HijackThis and Click Main Menu
    • Click Open the Misc Tools section button.
    • Then click the Open Uninstall Manager… button.
    • Click the Save list… button. Save uninstall_list to your desktop.

    • Open the Uninstall list file and post in your next reply, please.

There will be more housekeeping to do once you post your latest HijackThis LOG. Tell us how your PC is doing after the above removal.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfig] C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries\MSConfig.exe /auto
Please do not use MSCONFIG as ALL conflicting running process may not always get disabled. Reinstate all items disabled by MSCONFIG.

    REBOOT(into NORMAL MODE).

Uninstall Avast or AVG8 in NORMAL MODE.

    REBOOT (into NORMAL MODE).

Use the System File Checker (SFC) :
(typical runtime is 30 minutes) - please read over all instructions before proceeding.

Sometimes when you install third party software, it may overwrite important operating system files. This can cause instability - or worse. Windows XP includes a command line tool that you can use if you think this may have happened (for example, if you get a message box warning that there is a problem with a .dll or the system just seems unstable). Here's how to use it:
    1. Click Start | Run.
    2. In the Run box, type/copy&paste:
SFC /scannow (notice the space plus slash).
    3. Windows will scan all protected Windows files to verify that they are intact and in their original versions. If they're not, corrupt, missing or incorrect files are replaced. You may be prompted to insert your Windows XP installation CD if your Dllcache folder (where Windows keeps a copy of essential system files) has become corrupt or has been deleted.

To avoid the possibility of having to dig out and insert the OS CD, you can copy the i386 folder from the installation CD to your hard disk, and just point Windows there to find the files it needs. For instructions on how to do so, and more info about scannow, see:
scannow sfc - LEARN how to use SFC.EXE (system file checker) in this article!

    If still no joy,

    System Restore for Windows XP

Your best option may be to try a ‘system restore’ point (if available) to a date before any known problems or before you started performing any recent fixes:

    Click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

Check Restore my computer to an earlier date> Click Next.

Choose the date before you performed any recent fixes and click Next and Next again.

    REBOOT.

NOTE: If you use System Restore and don't like the new system state, you can undo the process and restore the machine to the system state it had before you ran System Restore. Alternatively, you can run System Restore to change the system state to a different restore point.

Post a revised HijackThis LOG and any current comments.

    avast! is uninstalled

I ran the system file check, but after it got done nothing happened(or I missed it). Does this mean that nothing is wrong?

For some reason my system restore is messed up. It says it wont load, there are no dates, it says reboot then try again but to no avail.

Please do not post your logs as attachments.

I notice you have both the IE and FireFox browsers - so your issues do not appear to be browser specific.

I ran the system file check, but after it got done nothing happened(or I missed it). Does this mean that nothing is wrong?
No - that scan may fix selected issues but is not a complete solution for anything.

For some reason my system restore is messed up. It says it wont load, there are no dates, it says reboot then try again but to no avail.
That is not a good sign, although it may simply mean that 'System restore' got turned off at some point and all prior existing ones are no longer available.

The following steps should be done in NORMAL MODE:

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
When next possible, download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.0 Update 7 or higher, and install it to your computer.

Older JAVA versions have vulnerabilities that malware can and are using to infect systems.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
    • Close any programs you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
    • Click Start > Control Panel.
    • Click Add/Remove Programs.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Please disable the ‘active protection’ components of the following application(s), as it/they may hinder the removal of some entries. Otherwise, certain cleaning attempts may be wrongly recognized and blocked as hijacking attempts or other potentially inappropriate behavior. You can re-enable such tools after your computer is clean. But, only one such active tool at-a-time is recommended.

    Disable Windows Defender
    • Open Windows Defender
    • Click Tools
    • Click General Settings
    • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
    • Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
    • Close Windows Defender

    Disable Spybot S&D (Teatimer)
    1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.
    2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"
    3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools
    4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List
    5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.
    6. Restart your computer.

    When disabled, please download ResetTeaTimer.bat
Double-click ResetTeaTimer.bat to remove all entries set by TeaTimer. This is done so it can be re-enabled without problems after cleaning.

    In NORMAL MODE again:

    If still present,

SELECT HijackThis FIX ITEMS: Scan with HijackThis and place a check next to these items:

    O16 - DPF: {149E45D8-163E-4189-86FC-45022AB2B6C9} -
    O16 - DPF: {30528230-99f7-4bb4-88d8-fa1d4f56a2ab} -
    O16 - DPF: {8AD9C840-044E-11D1-B3E9-00805F499D93} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_02) -
    O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0001-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_01) -
    O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0002-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_02) -
    O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_02) -
    O16 - DPF: {CC450D71-CC90-424C-8638-1F2DBAC87A54} (ArmHelper Control) -
    O16 - DPF: {D27CDB6E-AE6D-11CF-96B8-444553540000} (Shockwave Flash Object) -

Make sure that all browser windows and internet links are closed, even this one!
    CLICK ’FIX CHECKED’ with HijackThis.

    REBOOT.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your desktop.
    • Close all applications and windows.
    • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
    • When the scan is complete, a text file will open - Main.txt
    • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of Main.txt in your thread in the HijackThis Log Help Forum.
    • An additional text file, Extra.txt, will also be available (by default) in the following FOLDER, C:\Deckard\System Scanner.
    • Please go to that FOLDER and also copy the contents of Extra.txt to your post as well.

Note: some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet - please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so.

    What DSS will do:
    • Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
    • Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
    • Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed.
    Post Logs:
    • DSS Scan Results: contents of:
      • 1) Main.txt
      • 2) Extra.txt

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
All javas are now uninstalled. When I try to install the newest JRE is says "the instillation package is not supported by this processor type. Contact your product vendor" and when I try it in safe mode it says "the system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation."

It seems that DSS is not available because of some issue it has so I have not downloaded or run that.

    Disabled all real-time protection.
