Unhappy Malware Attacks: IE Laucnhes random ad popups

    Hi guys,

I left my PC (using Windows XP) at home and my housemate was using it to download Torrents. When I came back, my PC which has always been kept free from spywares (as I don't use my PC for anything else rather than work and normal surfing) has been attacked and infected with Malware attack, I presume.

    The Scenario:
Occasionally, like every 40 mins or so, Internet Explorer will start launching different ad pop-ups. It started first with Travian.com.my and then I started seeing other popups too. It launches one ad at a time and comes back later. I don't use IE for browsing, I use Firefox but the popups launche even if IE's not opened.

    Other probs that I've noticed:
    1. I've been getting alerts on my taskbar that My virtual windows memory is low or something like that. Not sure if this has anything to do with the attack..
    2. I've also noticed a weird process (44e0AUXo.exe) running on my Task Manager Processes.. and recently it's caused a problem.. I included the error message in my screenshot below..
    3. My explorer has also started to crash / blue screen. And my ym has been popping up and when minimized, it pops up again..

    What I've done
I did AVG Scan. Lavasoft ad-aware. It didn't solve anything. Hijackthis didn't find any threat either. I've thought of deleting my IE, but by doing that will cause problems to me as I need IE to do work.

So what should I do? It's really worrying me as I know the longer I let it stay in my CPU, the worst the situation will get..

    Screenshot of Errors
The picture is kinda big, so here it is

Hoping someone can help me out.. about to go bonkers here! I dread the thought of reformat.......

    Below is my Hijackthis log

    Welcome

I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:
    1. Run Spybot-S&D
    2. Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
    3. On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
    4. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.

    * Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE or HERE

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

    * Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and zLaunch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
    * If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
    * Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
    * The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
    * When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
    * Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    * When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
    * The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    * Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

    Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

    Hi Neal,

    I've deactivated TeaTimer.

Onto with the next step, I already have MBAM installed last week and ran a scan with it, it found 3 files that have been removed. However, the popups and errors still occur.

However, I will definitely do another Scan later today and post it here

    Thanks! a lot Neal

    Hi,

I just finished MBAM scan - however there is no malicious items were found.

One thing I can say the nasty malware is in this process called "44e0AUXo.exe" - this process somehow runs an IE (but hidden, not visible on taskbar but available in Processes) and occasionally, it will launch pop-up ads.

Apart from that, I also realized each time YM pops up automatically from the taskbar, the "44e0AUXo.exe" will be in the Processes.

    (screenshot of "44e0AUXo.exe" & IEexplorer.exe [ not visible on desktop ] )

    Here's my MBAM log file

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
go to task manager, click on process tab and highlight that "44e0AUXo.exe" and click on end process and reboot your PC.

Run hijackthis and click on "scan system only" button and put checks next to these:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank

O2 - BHO: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: solution Class - {99C6D1BB-7555-474C-91DA-D8FB62A9CC75} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\onEg320O.dll

Please disconnect from the Internet. Please close ALL browser windows (including this one).

Everything closed out but hijackthis and click on "fix checked"

    Reboot your PC

    Reconnect back to internet

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
    ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

    * Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
    * This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
    * Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
    * Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
    * Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
    * Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
    * When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:

    * If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
    * After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
    * Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
    * Close Dr.Web Cureit.
    * Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
    * After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply. You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report.

    New hijackthis log please.
