Hey there my D-A-L advisors. Its been a while since I visited. Means your good tutoring has keps me safe all this time...well until now...so here I am humbly seeking your wise assistance to rid me of my latest annoyances...Rootkit-gen and WIN32:Trojan-gen Virus

Right now I am running a XP sp2 operating system 1.66Ghz with 504MB ram 60GBhdd and 200+ GB external backup drive.

I recently went wildly surfing on the net and it may have gotten me into this mess. I have done virus scan (avast), CC cleaner, registry mechanic, Yahoo Antispy and a host of others, but I still keep getting a msg from avast saying either "win32"-trojan-gen" or "WIN32-Rootkit-gen[RTK]" has infected some file or the other. During the several virus scans that I have done, the final report shows several files infected by these viruses (virii??) and they were quarantined. Needless to say, after doing that and rebooting, it happens again. I have exhausted all my 'at home' skills and would love if you could help me in removing these trouble makers from my laptop. I have included my HJT log below. I am not able to log on to the net, or if by mere luck it brings up my home page...thats it...nothing else happens. Please advise me on this one...

Now download ComboFix and save to your desktop:

Note:

It is IMPORTANT that it is saved directly to your desktop

Close any open browsers.

Disconnect from the Internet.

Please do not re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.

Disable your antivirus program and any realtime malware scanners and script blockers now


How To Disable



Double click on combofix.exe and follow the prompts.

When it's finished it will produce a log.
Post the entire contents of C:\ComboFix.txt into your next reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running.

That may cause the program to freeze/hang.

Do NOT post the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt unless I ask.

Re-enable your anti-virus and re-connect back to the internet and post the combofix log.



*Note*
In case your Antivirus or any other realtime scanner is displaying an alert after you downloaded Combofix or while you use Combofix,please disable your scanner and redownload Combofix again.
Some scanners may see some combofix related components as suspicious and block or delete them while there's nothing wrong with them.

ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper.

I have followed your instructions by the dots but I am still havin issues. My first concern occured when I went to microsoft's support to download the recovery console my my pc. I have XP media center 2002 but there was none present for it. The options were only for XP pro or XP home. Anyway I played smart and saved them both to my desktop, in addition to the comboxix that was also saved there. I then drag n drop 'XP HOME' to Combofix and started the process as instructed.

Everything went well, all the prompts expeced did come and I followed through. After I was prompted about the clock settings, and such. Combofox started to delete some files then, out of nowhere came the blue screen of death, and it read:

So then, I tried using the XP PRO recovery console that idownloaded and dragged it to Comobfix and redid everything. The same exact thing happened.

So now I am back to square one, and even more so lost....

Just delete that combofix for now and...



* Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE or HERE

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and zLaunch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.


Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediatly.

I followed as instructed. One thing with this infection is it prevents me from using the internet eventhough I am connected. Becauseof this, it was not able to check for any updates for the antimalaware software so I ran it as is. The report is posted below.

After I rebooted, I got this message when the laptop came up

The application or DLL C:\Windows\system32\mqxnacwj.dll is not a valid windows imafe. Please check against your installation diskette.

Another similar message came up but I wasnt able to catch it.

Then click finish and reboot your computer.

Download SDFIX and save it to your Desktop.

• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
• Choose your usual account.

• In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
• Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
• Type Y to begin the script.
• It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
• Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
• Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
• When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
• Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log

Followed as usual and my reports are posted below. I am able to log on the net now, since I am using the laptop to respond. I dont see any virus/adaware/trojan warning from avast as yet but I will keep it running for a while to see what happens. It seems to be running ok except that it feels very lazy...ie, stuff takes longer that usual to happen when I click on things...

I'm back again with the results, and again my heartiest thanks again to you for your help.

While the SUperantispyware was beign done, I got some virus pop up alerts form avast for the Rootkin-gen adaware/virus. This is the first time it is happening since we started this exercise working on the pc.

About terrible state of the pc, wow, I am shocked. It was that bad huh? I dont recall trying to performany transaction since the pc was down since I barely was able to log on to the net. I may have logged onto my bank account (which is always empty except for payday) but thats it until yesterday I think. After I did the SDFix and fully got back my internet connection, I went online and may have logged onto other bank accounts and/or credit cards. Would that count as being in danger still? Otherwise, I have a file on my pc where I store the dozens of different passwords I use on these websites...please tell me that the files were not "copyable" or "readable" by these pathogens.

What good program can Iuse to monitor my system tray and turn off tuff that I dont want to start automatically? I've always used msconfig but only recently I am finding out that this is not the ideal route to take.
