re: About: Blank(RESOLVED)
Hello Neal,
Here is my latest:
After I ran remove about and tried IE, I got 10 pages of IE with about:blank quickly piling up in my inbox and I could not x out so and shut it down by hitting the off button and I reopened in safe mode.
I ran the removeabout from scorpion in safe mode. I selected restore mfr settings. When it asked to reset my home page, got two messages, back and forth: one was http://ie.redirect.hp.com/sv/rdr?TYP...llionpf=laptop --and the other was-- http://www.microsoft.com/asapil/redi...vr=6ar=msnhome I also had some warning indicators in the configuration section of removeabout with the http://ie.redirect/hp.com.... so I deleted those and selected restore all configuration button at bottom.
I thought that was weird I had gotten two choices for the home page, as if one was continuing to reset from the other (which one I would not know) so I set the home page to Microsoft Corporation and reran remove about and restore all configuration again.
The removeabout configuration section looked different now. I didn't get a choice of two sites to set my homepage to. It just accepted microsoft. com.
I also ran AVG twice and Antisuperspyware and neither showed anything.
While these programs were running, I went to IE and under the security -advanced- the phishing filter is still OFF and I can not get it ON. (After I logged back on, I went to TOOLS and tried to turn on, restarted and still it is off. The yellow exclamation point remains on.) Also while I was in IE, I noticed that when setting the homepage in safe mode, one option is "blank" and if I select this, "about blank" is defaulted (apparently by IE) into the url. Surely this is not related to the about:blank problems I am having, but my question is "if I selected the IE blank option, would I see about:blank in my url while surfing?" This of course, does not explain the frozen pages or the multiple about:blank pile up I had.
Then I ran removeblank again and now in the configuration box there are no warning indicators, all is green. In the green there are several messages that have "aboutblank in them and they are:
Handler for "about" protocl c.''windows/system32/html.dll -AND- Default URl http://www.microsoft.com/isapi/redir...ie&pver-6&ar=m..... -AND- Blank page for "about:"protocal res://msh.tnil.dll/blank.htm
Now when I go into IE, it is set for Microsoft Corporation. I have gone to a few places, such as cnn, cbs, abc, and SO FAR NO ABOUT:BLANK (dare I hope?), however when I try to open my gmail it says my cookies are not enabled, which can't be so (can it?) as I can open gmail in firefox and browse in IE without any problems, so I am afraid to follow the instructions to allow cookies through IE. It says: *Your browser's cookie functionality is turned off. Please turn it on. [?]*
I will use IE more this evening and report back. Thank you for your patience.

I worked on IE last night and I think about:blank might be gone. Thank you Neal! Please send me information on how to donate. If it comes back should I post on this site or make a new one? Diane

Great news, I will mark this as resolved, if further problems occur down the road just start a new thread.
To donate, there is a spot at upper right of main page and a donate button in my signature also and thanks for that.
That is the first time I have seen about:blank on a Vista machine and usually is easy to find and it normally dies withthout a whimper.
Good luck.
